Hi
Have a new Codan NGT on order, i have read on this site that you can use it for email,is this correct and if so how does it work?. As email = internet does this mean i can check my investments from the bush as well & if so just how slow are the speeds and what are the costs involved?.
Thanks

Looks to be a nice purchase, good onya, mate I don't reackon you will be on EO with it ...lol but it does have Text messaging, as for emails, it's not listed in the specs for the Venture Pack but is in the AR

The NGT AR is a comprehensive solution to your communication needs.

While incorporating all the usual features of Codan’s leading-edge High Frequency (HF) radio technology, this transceiver also features a user-friendly handset, advanced calling features and Easitalk as standard. Extensive Automated Link Establishment (ALE) capabilities (where permitted), GPS, fax, data and email
transmission are optional.

Yes you can but you'll need a HF modem and speed will be about 6kb max so forget surfing the net or downloading attachments. Satellite might be a better option.

Everyone should have a hobby :)

Very roughly: I think the front page of the Explore Ox forum sends about 70kb of data and the other end would need to send some handshaking data too so it would take somewhere around 90 seconds to load.

If you go for an Amateur Radio Licence (pretty easy to get these days) you could use a Pactor 3 modem for net access which would give you up to 19.2kb and would make limited net use bearable, maybe? In reality anything more than text e-mail over HF is probably not workable - the laws of physics win again :)

Thanks Mike
I might look into the Pactor 3 thing, any idea of the costs involved with this?. What's involved in the Amateur Licence,is it a matter of just paying a fee or do have the give the grey matter a work out and sit a test or something?
Cheers Lyndon

Last time I checked Pactor 3 modems were about A$1800! :(

The Amateur Licence requires a test - 3 levels - this is the basic licence:

Have you heard much about next G?. Will be replacing the CDMA with a new phone shortly + will be getting mobile wireless through Telstra.

Hi Lyndon,

I have a Nera R-BGAN for testing in the Simpson and Western Deserts that has just arrived in the last 3 weeks. It is a notebook size 2 way Internet connection that gives speeds up to about 150k when connected to my notebook. Yes, you can surf the web and send emails.

I had problems with the authentication setup initially but I'm very impressed. Hardware costs about $600. It is only used in a static situation but I have had a connection sitting on a dune on the Madigan Line. Drawback at this stage (but not for me) is that the satellite covers from Mt Isa west but if you are from SA sholdn't bother you initially.

Hope this helps.
Cheers

Hi Lyndon,

The satellite system is Inmarsat, traditionally expensive because it has had to toehold in the maritime industry. I can't tell you the cost as this is a trial system for a Brisbane supplier. If you want email him on farnie@globalsat.com.au or 07 3294 7787

I hope this helps.

Cheers

Have a look at www.bcon.com.au/default.htm as they have a small message service that works with the NGT.

Have a Barrett 550 and just use the GPS logging system that allows family members with internet access to follow our trip.

I have just checked and BCON is not commercial at the moment but they hope to be by the end of the year.

I am still using it on a trial basis.
