just read some news on new mine near mitchell plateau. i am not usually against mining ,but cant they leave somthings as it is, especially that area.
after seeing what the refinery has done to the waters around gove, i am not too keen on this project. it will be the last frontier penetrated by commerce and pollution.

Thanks for raising this Sam. This is a super-critical issue and there is a lot of activity going on at present between the WA Government and industry.

At the same time as taking a hands-off policy to the protection of heritage and environment in the area, the WA Government is positively planning industrial development and new mining on the Mitchell Plateau.

There is a big Bauxite project and others, that will get legs based on the apparent approvals of the off-shore gas facilities and planned pipelines that the indigenous owners appear set to give the go-ahead to.

You should:
1. visit the area and see the amazing unprotected environment we are talking about
2. talk with locals with some understanding of the issue like John Haywood, the park ranger for Mitchell Falls NP
3. start making a big fuss with WA politicians
4. telling your friends.

I am aware of only one group "CHEAK" - www.savethekimberley.com that are active on this issue. If anyone is aware of any others I would love to hear.

Time to take a trip to Walsh Point or Port Warrender and see what pristine country is being planned to be done over, not to speak of the areas on the plateau where the mines are planned.

Cheers
Andrew.

There was a mine there before, that is why the airstrip is there.

There was an exploration camp there in the 70's, with a small crusher, most of which has gone now, and in more recent times the scrapes have been restored, the only remaining infrastructure being the large airstrip and the roads in there. I was under the impression that mining was not proceeding.
It would be a tragedy if the mine went ahead.
I cannot see how the plateau area, with its unique stands of Livistona palms would remain intact with mining there. The priceless rainforest remnants would be obliterated as well. The port facilities would most likely ruin the historic middens at Pt Walsh, apart from being a total eyesore.
Very sad...

About the only thing the refinery at (Gove) Nhulunbuy has done is give the traditional owners millions and millions of dollars in royaltys and support to a community. Ask Gallawuy Yunipingu if he wants the refinery closed? I think not. I'm not a scientist by I've noticed no difference in the bay or waters around Nhulunbuy and I live here. Obviously a person would be niave to believe a 30 year old refinery and mine has zero impact on the environment.
