Using the right oil can make a difference.
Using an industry standard SAE80 oil does make the gearbox stiffer.

Try the forum as mentioned above.

No problems.
Not sure which gearbox you have.
So I would check the pajero forum for the best oil to suit your gearbox.

Hi

Oldplodder is right, castrol make one just for Mitsubishi. It is their normal numbers with the letter "M" at the end, Toyota 80 series use it in there boxes as well, but with that any K's it could be getting to the time for a rebuild.

Have fun

dont rebuild just yet, the others are right, if the oil is too thick it will give the symptoms you said, sometimes, engine oil can be used in gearboxes, eg. ford, but check it out. if you box was buggered you would have heard it .

The old 2.6l 4 cyl engine gearboxes need a 5th gear rebuild every 200 thou K.
The 3.0l V6 had a stronger gearbox.
The 2.8l diesel and 3.5l V6 (same gearbox) is pretty tough, and heavier again than the 3.0l V6.
I have 300 (well 287 :o)) thou K up now on the 2.8l diesel and no problems, and it does a bit of surburban driving up and down through the gears. 5th gear is just starting to make some noise.
Been a while since I changed the oil in the gearbox (usually do it every 50 to 80 thou), and use a semi synthetic 70 grade oil. I try and stick close to what Mitsubishi recommend, as Jeff said.
Did go too light at one change too, after some oil that just didn't work because it was too heavy. Had to change it again.
