Hi everyone,

We are looking at getting a UHF Radio. I am trying to work out the best way to go. Our use for them is two fold.

1. We want them to keep track of the kids when they go wandering off around the caravan park's or camping spots we happen to be at.

2. We want some way to be in touch in case of emergencies etc.

So which is the best way to go.

I have been thinking of getting a decent UHF installed into the car and just buying a couple of cheap hand helds to help me with point 1.

So what do you think?

If the kids aren't straying too far them any 1W hand held will do for them. I have a a car radio and three hand helds, one for me, one for each of the kids. The only problem is that the kids still forget that everything they say to each other can be heard by anyone else within range.
I prefer having my own hand held because very often I'm too far from the car to hear what my boys are upto, with a hand held I can hang around the campfire, go for a leak, go fishing, whatever, and still be in contact.

Do your 1W handhelds chew up the batteries? I find my .5W ones only get a day if on standby all day and if in convoy with other cars communicating all the time about half that. They are quite old ones and I refuse to buy quality batteries as they dont make much of a difference.

Hi chars. I've got a pair of Uniden 041 with rechargeable batteries but they last for ages, I also have a 2W Uniden and that also has a rechargeable pack but i find it lasts for weeks on standby and all weekend if used sparingly for vehicle guidance and tracking the kids.

Handhelds are also useful for when you send SWMBO up the track to take pis of you coming thru. Also useful for when you send 'her' across the croc. infested river to check the depth !!!
