Howdy folks,
based on your experience, how much do you reckon it would cost to go camping up
cape york for six weeks, starting from
Sydney?
We're talking 4.2D Landcruiser and camping.

I have been looking at a few caravan sites and have seen this question asked on them as
well as here on the odd occassion, and to be honest, I cant believe the amount of money some people claim that it costs them on a weekly basis.
I have read of people who say it costs them anything from $500 to $1200 per week.
I am not knocking anyone who can afford $1000 or $1200 per week, good on them I say, but how many people can afford that sort of money and what do they spend it on.
It really concerns me when I hear the higher values quoted because we are heading off on Friday for 3 months to
Darwin and back and have budgeted for $600 per week while away. That will cover all fuel including towing a 19' van, about 1/2 of that time in caravan parks, food, grog and some tourist type activities.
Maybe my expectations of cost are wrong, I hope not.

> $1200..... but how many people can afford that sort of money and what do they spend it on.
I agree.. I would think $100 a day for most days, but throw a few $150-200 days in and it dont take long to lift the budget.
Depends on how many people, what car they are in, how lavish they exist, etc.... but Im with you, not many people I know can afford that sorta coin per week for 6 weeks!

Maybe the higher cost includes living away from
home expenses rent or mortgage per week and things like that…..but I would have thought around $100 a day should see you through

Done the trip twice from Queanbeyan NSW to the 'Tip' return - last time in 2004 was 10600km with mostly
bush camping and a few nights in rellies back yards. All up cost was $4500 for 5 weeks for 2 adults.

Hey cruiser maybe its because you are budgeting to tightly when you go away and killing off those brain cells ...hehehe Only jokin, I actually totally agree with your conception of trip costs, not counting bills that still had to paid back
home we spent a tad over $5,000 to do 13,500k's
Broome, GRR,
Katherine,
Darwin and through to
Lawn Hill in 7 weeks. That included fuel etc. Only stayed in a couple of parks so most was
free camping or minimal
camp fees and we had a ball. It also inluded a couple of boat tours and a coupe of Chopper Trips. So yah I just wish I had $1200 or so to blow each week whilst away..... Mind you i don't believe i would have any more fun than i do now.

well LOL
Guess that makes me a dribbling brain dead member with a thousand mile stare.
Doesn't help that the wife has the same affliction.
The air is that thick here I need to find a knife, but it will all be right on Friday morning as we lock the
gate behind us and head north.
Think its going to be the longest 60 hours ever.

Be aware of the quarantine line just north of
Coen. Can't bring fresh food south.
Be aware of grog controls. They vary depending on where you go or visit.
Envious of the trip. Six weeks is about the right length of time. Most of us have to do it in less time.

We usually only worry about the fuel cost, try to
bush camp as much as possible, rarely stay in parks.
These days we average costs around $240 per thousand k's for fuel (av 16/100 @ av $1.50 per litre) so 11k trip will cost around $2,640 for fuel. If you start paying for accomodation or camping fees it will add considerably to the total.
We don't worry about food costs as they work out about the same as at
home.
I don't get anal about factoring in vehicle servicing costs or tyre wear either as I do it all myself when required.
For your proposed trip with two bods I would need at least $3k extra in the kitty before leaving
home, more if you have kids or don't
bush camp. More again if you intend to eat out, take joyflights, do touristy things etc.

Cost the wife and I along with 2 teenage girls around $6,000 for 5 weeks.
That included everything including a bit of fishing and some shopping in
Cairns on the way back
home...

The trip from
Gold Coast to the tip cost us almost spot on $100.00/day for me and the missus. We had 4 weeks and spent all but 4 days of that north of
Cairns
Nissan GQ towing camper. Up and back on OTL and side trip to
Maytown.
Free camped on the way up to
cairns and back. Free camped at
somerset for a week
Free camping on OTL and
Jardine. Most other
places $10/person /night
Have fun we are heading back this year I just love the place

Thanks for bringing this topic up ........ went and figured out what my trip
Brisbane Flinders range
Brisbane is going to cost and if lucky (read plan
well) $90 a day. I will be keeping costs on this trip so be interesting to see at the end.
But a $100 a day sounds around the ball park and that depends on how
well yeah want to live and what you get up to.
Which I was going back ......... but thats next year hopefully for 6 weeks.
Brian

I figure that there is a bunch of 'costs' you can disregard....and that's for food and beverages - hell no matter where you are you have to eat, drink and be merry. Only real costs are fuel, wear/tear on truck, and accommodation when not in the bush.
