At the last meeting of the ex ASIO & serving officer's caravanning club I was asked if I could form a committee of inquiry into LED vehicle globes.

"I wish to announce the completion of this task and wish to advise that it is the findings of both the committee and my learned colleagues that these are a waste of money with the possible exception of the "white" LED globes when used in the reversing lights of a motor vehicle.

The findings are as follows:

1) the standard 21 watt incandecesent globes put out approximately 3 times more light measured in lumens (as my meter is an antique one);
2) the angle of "viewability" is much reduced on the LED globes as the beam is directional and unlike the incandecenent globes can only be seen from within very narrow fields of view. This in effect means that traffic indicators, stop & tail lights can only effectively be seen from the rear of the vehicle and therefore these globes do not confirm to ADR's. As you are no doubt aware certain vehicle manufacturers continue the rear lights slightly to the side of the vehicle to enable the drivers intentions to be made clear to motorists travelling or observing from an adjacent lane.;
3) the "white" reversing lights however are an exception to the forgoing. While useless as front Parking lamps as specified in 2 above they do project a clear bluish white beam of a spotlight pattern to the rear of the vehicle and unlike the incandescent globes that provide more of a flood like effect in this application are perhaps worth considering. In the case of the trial vehicle they provided excellent illumination for the rear view camera at night.
4) the fact that the LED globes will be of far greater longevity than the incandescent globes was taken into consideration however the fact that the light produced by these globes is a) far less & b) presented in a direct beam rather than diffused would indicate that they may not actually be seen by other motorists thus negating any advantage gained by longevity.

Many thanks for referring this task to me, my bill follows under separate cover."

Any further comments, I guess this has been covered before.....
if not perhaps Gramps can take us out with a rousing chorus...

Hi Mr Fawlty

Any through report would have references to the specific products tested.

The above data may be correct if referring to a buget replacement from jaycar etc, however Leds have the capacity to significantly outperform bulbs and can be supplied with more actual light output per watt than bulbs , and are readily manufactured with 120 degree viewing angles.

All you need to do is get a OEM replacement from a car that uses them.

P.S. For the report , worth adding in that LEDs turn on brake lights faster and this is equivalent to approx 1 meter shorter stopping distance at 60kmh.

I.E. If you get run up the rear the nose of the offending car will stop in rear passenger seat , not in drivers seat.

Yes you are correct, I was asked to check the "elcheapo" replacements from Smiths Dick.... Viewing angle was about 90 degos but the whits was about 30...
I had not tested the visual innertia aspect of this either, Why the hell did these people not get you to do the tests?
Stuff this, 63 mins of dedicated research thrown out the window because I was not through enough and had no vested interest....

Run up the rear!!!!!!..... well I wil repeat this even though it's not friday but I think I told you all about the horrendous acident that occured endagering lives outside the Woden hospital in Feb this year. A female motorist rammed the back of the jack and smashed the front of her upmarket Mazda on the towball. 2 cars behind was a policeman and female aide de camp. He got out of his car at the same time as I and we both met at the drivers window of the offenders vehicle, this stupid bimbo is on the phone, we assumed seeking help but no she was making a sale, totally ignored me and the cop.... anyway to cut a long story short she was charged with all the usuall offences but the Male cop said to me not quite soto voce ' women!, thank god they have bleep s, some of them would be useless without them'
I'm sure that does not apply to most women, just the female ones....Ok I'm off to hide from the fusilade from all the femmes d' moteur I've offended...

Mr Fawlty

Is this the real report that the Minister has changed to suit his greater knowledge (sorry, I mean been subject to rigorous scrutiny & review), or is it the report by the operative who was foolish enough to use facts?

Could be very different! he-he-he-he

Well actually this report could be attributed to "sources close to the supplier" but I always stoop to using the facts, unless of course the facts don't support my view in which case I generate my own statistics to support my own view. I do have some credibility though, I always check with my wife before making promises that may or may not make me look like a fool....
And for the interest of the person suggesting that I may have benifitted in some way from the purchase of these globes for testing rest assured that I have returned them for a full refund as they do not meet the requirements of the ADR's, the look on the face of the PFT at said retail outlook was priceless when I told him to stick his globes in his socket and try them...

Or , has this report been "seasonally adjusted" (because we don't like the actual figures) to take into account daylight saving (if applictable) the phase of the moon, cloudy or overcast, summer or winter (this can produce a significant variation due to the difference in daylight hours) nominated voltage over actual voltage, divided by the square root of the date last Tuesday?

Basil,

How about forming another committee to investigate and report to ExplorOz members, the advantages (and disadvantages if any) of sealed LED stop/tail/indicator lights. The whole light, not just the globes.

I suspect you make come back with a completely different report.

I replaced the rear lights on the Camper with LED lamps and couldn't be happier.

The old incandescent lamps had a tendency to become intermittent with poor connection between the globe base and the contact point. After buggering about with them over a period of time, a chance advertisement I saw from Autopro for these "you beaut" brake/tail/indicator lamps at $49 each had me wipping down to the local store for a closer look. Very good indeed.
Because they are sealed they even work under water.

I have since done the same with the Trailer and contemplating a similar solution for the folding boat trailer when these lights become salt water affected.

Gday Mr Sandman and Basil.
This is indeed an interesting question, and one that may in fact perplex the more learned amongst us when it comes to these matters, however with the use of a few simple words i am sure that i can enlighten one and all as to the benifits and detractions of utilising the L.E.D. Combo lamps that are being refered to.

They work bloody brilliantly,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,when you are directly behind a vehicle with these lights fitted you know they have hit the brakes et al.
BUT,,,,,,,,as has allready been pointed out,,,,they have a limited side view (not sure of angle tho)
At night however, they really come into their own. The brightness of these lights is excellent to say the least, casting a very good glow over a large area, with the added benifit being that they can be seen from a very long way away.
Just make sure that they are well secured to the vehicle,,,,and make sure your wiring and connections are even better, then they will last a lifetime.....or untill you reverse into something.

meow.

rick.

"or until you reverse into something" Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm thats why I have a candid camera mounted on the rear of both Jack & Gin Palace, so that if I'm going to reverse into something I can see what I'm reversing into....
Yes the purpose made LED lamps are a different matter, to look for some good buys simply search for "LED trailer" in EBay. Note though that few actually do carry an ADR compliance and I would suspect that for the pedants that inhabit the world of 4x4 and camping they would insist that their tails were covered by lights that complied with the ADR's. Noteworthy here are trailer lights that are of the "festoon" type, they still fit them to new trailers, vans etc but they are not legal, but who gives a choc dipped quokka?
I also noted some LED globes for sale that were inverted pineapple shape to allow the light to shine sideways so those may be a better choice in a conventional situation....
When the lenses on the Gin Palace fade I will replace the existing setup with ADR approved LED units.
I have seen some on some vans and campers and they do work superbly, Im not knocking the product, I'm just doing what I was asked and I can only work within my brief.
Now if someone wants a report on reversing cameras and LCD monitors - elcheapo versus expensive I can handle that with great authority and passion.... but you would have to ask nicely.
