At the last meeting of the ex ASIO & serving officer's caravanning club I was asked if I could form a committee of inquiry into LED vehicle globes.

"I wish to announce the completion of this task and wish to advise that it is the findings of both the committee and my learned colleagues that these are a waste of money with the possible exception of the "white" LED globes when used in the reversing lights of a motor vehicle.

The findings are as follows:

1) the standard 21 watt incandecesent globes put out approximately 3 times more light measured in lumens (as my meter is an antique one);
2) the angle of "viewability" is much reduced on the LED globes as the beam is directional and unlike the incandecenent globes can only be seen from within very narrow fields of view. This in effect means that traffic indicators, stop & tail lights can only effectively be seen from the rear of the vehicle and therefore these globes do not confirm to ADR's. As you are no doubt aware certain vehicle manufacturers continue the rear lights slightly to the side of the vehicle to enable the drivers intentions to be made clear to motorists travelling or observing from an adjacent lane.;
3) the "white" reversing lights however are an exception to the forgoing. While useless as front Parking lamps as specified in 2 above they do project a clear bluish white beam of a spotlight pattern to the rear of the vehicle and unlike the incandescent globes that provide more of a flood like effect in this application are perhaps worth considering. In the case of the trial vehicle they provided excellent illumination for the rear view camera at night.
4) the fact that the LED globes will be of far greater longevity than the incandescent globes was taken into consideration however the fact that the light produced by these globes is a) far less & b) presented in a direct beam rather than diffused would indicate that they may not actually be seen by other motorists thus negating any advantage gained by longevity.

Many thanks for referring this task to me, my bill follows under separate cover."

Any further comments, I guess this has been covered before.....
if not perhaps Gramps can take us out with a rousing chorus...
