Martyn (WA)
Forumites,
I've moved on now and purchased a 98 LR Discovery 2.5 TD, whilst many of you aspire to owning such a prestigious vehicle I'm one of the lucky ones.....
In the next breath I have an ever so slight oil leak between the transfer case and the gearbox, can I remove the transfer case from the gearbox in situ, fix the oil leak and go on my merry way, rather than remove the entire gearbox? If so how hard is it, could I have replies from people with experience of this rather than the next door neighbours best friends uncle if you know what I mean.
Just a a bit of good thing to report I purchased this vehicle from
Adelaide via the internet, made a bit of a holiday out of the trip back to
Perth. Couldn't of wished to have dealt with a better person. The vehicle was as described and a month later I believe I got a good deal, great vehicle. Plus I scored a couple of points with my wife combining a bit of a trip with the purchase.
To cap this off I sold my Range Rover to a guy in Victoria via the internet again a perfect transaction, this time the vehicle went over East via the train, didn't cost as much as I thought it would of done.

Hi Martyn,
Haven't done that job on a Discovery.
If yours is a '98 it is the TDi 300, a 4 cyl diesel turbo.
I have a '99 Disco TD5 auto, great vehicle on and off road in standard form.
If you need to find someone who knows Landrovers, I can recommend Kevin Falconbridge at Jordan Rover Tech in
John St, Bentley. Not the cheapest in town but certainly one of the best for servicing and parts. Rover dealers tend to be a bit too dear IMHO.
Good to find another Disco owner here among the Toysan brigade.
Cheers

Disco,
Thanks for that I was going to give Kevin a call tomorrow I just wondered if anyone on the
forum had any experience this evening. You're right Kevin's good value, I talk to him on quite a regular basis.

Hi again Martyn,
On a wild offchance, did you happen to know a couple of guys named Hooper and Fuller who grew up in Como WA back in the late 50's?
If not, don't worry, but if you did,I know you too.

Hello Martyn
Back to the future....LOL
My experience with Landrover products has been that ALL of them leak oil somewhere. It has to do with the quality of their gaskets and seals which are not compatible with the harsh climate of the Antipodes.
Just keep on topping up or maybe put a gasket sealer additive in the box.
Cheers

Hi Willem,
Yea still in the background reading away contribute every now and again depends if we move off tyres and
suspension. Great site still, good to see some of the hardy annuals are still plugging away.

Speaking as a ling time LR owner I can say this.
They're supposed to leak, how else can you tell if it's got oil in it.
It's when it stops leaking that you worry.
I know that's an oldie but I couldn't resist :-))))))
Enjoy, sounds like you got a good deal on a good car.

It is possible to separate the transfer case leaving the gearbox insitu.
Re-installation is the hard bit as the seals are likely to get damaged whilst man handling it back into position.

If it's ever so slight why bother? From previous experience sometimes when you try to fix a slight leak you end up creating a bigger one!
It's actually a very clever built in system that ensures the oil is regularly changed.
As said above, if it stops leaking start worrying!

Baldrick,
I understand what you mean and yes when it stops leaking start worrying, yes fine but I'll put money it will stiop leaking when i don't have access to any oil, usually the case.
I suppose I'm a bit anal when it comes to my vehicle I like it to be just right, no doubt I'll get comments now about what I drive..................

geez it was hard finding this post again lol
spoke to the guy at work about the shaft thing i was talking about the other day.
once the transfer case is out theres a shaft that slides into the gearbox through a seal(the one leaking)make sure the shaft isnt worn on the shaft it sits over(you will undersatand once its out)he also said to
check one of the gears that are low range on there shaft for play(the gear goes over a shaft than wears out)grab the gear and make sure thetres no play
pretty easy job if every thing else is ok
cheers

nowimnumberone,
Thanks for taking the time out to get this information to me it's appreciated. I feel happy enough now to have a go. The gears you are talking about shouldn't be worn the gearbox has recently had a major overhaul, so I suspect the person doing the job damaged the seal you talk about before I bought the vehicle. I'll just have to be more careful.
