G'day guys.
Looking at a 2002/2003 3.0L TD Jackaoo for everyday use and towing a 21 foot wakeboard boat (approx 2 tonne).
Any
feedback on this vehicle would be great. Not really going to use for any 4WD'ing. Mainly for everyday use and towing and some playing in the dunes over here in WA.
Was on the wake.com
forum asking about them as a tow vehicle and someone put me onto this
forum so thought id post the question.
A mate had the petrol one and swears by it. However i have had some
feedback that the TD model is plagued with engine problems??? True???
Any
feedback would be great...

G'day colze, have a look over on www.australia4wd.com, everything you need to know is there regarding the Jackaroo.
They are an excellent car (have one myself in petrol), however as you have heard, the diesel is somewhat 'fussy' would be the best description.
Cheers

Have one myself.
Would not recommend you purchase one.
Check the website as mentioned. Some people have them and have not had any problems at all.
In my personal opinion I would expect that the number of significant faults as compared to the number of diesels sold to be very high.

Mine is a 2002 TD. I have had some minor problems and one recall for the injectors. DO NOT PURCHASE ONE THAT HAS NOT GOT RECALL AMENDMENT STICKERS ON THE ROCKER COVER!!! They do require 10w/30 oil and that is hard to get in nonsynthetic anything heavier than 10w and they won't start enthusiastically especially in cold weather.
The problems I had were all due to poor dealer servicing and stuffups in manufacture ( a lable had been left or had gotten into the water galleries and had formed a wad of papier mache at the thermostat causing overheating in some circumstances). As a tow vehicle I think they are not bad at all, full chassis, reasonably torquey, ecconomical and now sensibly priced. A 2002 TD Equipe should sell for around $26000 with 140000km on the clock.
Would I buy another? probably.... but I would like to see a "genuine" service history and I would go over the mechanicals to make sure such things as the spines on the drive shafts were showing signs of being greased, something the dealers deem unnecessary (but charge for). Also
check oil levels in the transfer and diffs and
check the auto trans oil for signs of being overheated (smelly brown colour)

G'day Colze, I have owned a 2002 since new. Now has 130,000 on the clock and have never had any engine problems and has been regularly serviced. We use it to tow a tandem horse float ( with horses of course) and find the diesel economical and suitable for towing. This jackaroo has done 2 desert trips and numerous week long trips over all types of terrain.Comfortable and easy to drive my wife has now commadered it for herself.

I had two of them. I was plagued with engine problems and the dealer kept saying "never seen that before" and would then charge me to fix them. Those vehicles cost me heaps. Oddly enough, most of the troubles I had became recall issues - after I had gotten rid of them because they were killing me.
My advice? Don't touch the diesels, they are a nightmare. I don't think I went a single month from new to when they were sold where one or the other didn't have the "
check engine" light lit.
There is a reason why GMH stopped bringing them in.
Cheers,
Russ.
