G’day all

In need of some advice.

Achieved a long term aim of crossing the Simpson in April. Won’t be last time either.
Done many other smaller trips in/near SA including Googs, Ngarkat/Big Desert/Wyperfield, Flinders etc. But I’ve had trouble deciding what our next major trip should be – for us that’s 2-3 week off-road trip out of Adelaide.

Considering the kids, I felt the Simpson trip had such good highlights with Painted Desert, Dalhousie, Eyre Crk, Big Red, Birdsville, Cooper Crk. I didn’t mind the dunes either (LOL).

I can’t seem to get too interested in Anne Beadell Hwy – Willem wrote a while back there are 1300km of corrugations. And from what I’ve read there are few highlights to match the Simpson.

Other trips I’ve thought about are:
-Vic High Country
-Alice Springs region / Old Ghan track
-west NSW somewhere (don’t know what’s there)

Thinking of the kids, my desire for a bit of a 4wd challenge and a 2-3 week trip out of Adelaide, where next should we go??

Any thoughts about the Anne Beadell Hwy would also be appreciated.

JD

Yep too many corrugations for me on the AB...lol

You could go to Innamincka, Haddons Corner, Diamantina Lakes, Winton, north to the Gulf via Lawn Hill, then Borroloola, then south(bitumen for a short while) to Barkly Homestead, then Epenarra, Davenport Ranges, Ammaroo, Gem Tree, Arltunga, Alice Springs, Finke, Oodnadatta Track and home. Three weeks should be a nice relaxed trip with lots to see and mainly off the beaten tracks.

Cheers

Jdwynn,
plenty of options in my books, some of which depending on how much driving you like to do. Some people, like me, travel thousands of K's in a two or three week period. I would certainly recommend the red center. Alice, Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon, Palm Springs, Finke Gorge, Merene Loop, McDonald Ranges, Chambers Pillar etc etc the list goes on, an excellent area. Vic High country something speacial, NSW....well my point is if you don't mind doing a few miles there are many options.

Do some reasearch, which you obviously are, pick one that looks and sounds good and go for it. Thats the beauty of exploring in my books. Some trips you will treasure, some you will enjoy but decide never to return.

Doing the Vic high country at this time of year would be interesting.

From reports Falls Creek had snow today, which in my book is to cold.

JD, having done the AB from Coober Pedy to Neale Junction and I agree about the corrugations, however the country is distinctly remote and interesting at the same time. You don't have to do the whole track asa for instance you can head south from Vokes Hill corner or Neale Junction. We are heading to the west later this year and we want to finish off the bit bit we missed. Not sure which way we will go yet but it has drawn me back to it.
Cheers

thanks Des
But do you think there's enough in it for the kids though. I just got it in my head that every now and then there needs to be something fairly speccy to keep their interest up (and if we can do that then we all have a good time!!). JD

Lot's of camels out there to chase down the road cos they just won't move out the way. Unfortunately for the kids, their interests would be fairly well strained I think. The diversity of the flora and fauna is what makes it interesting for us and that is unlikely to entertain them for long.

If you liked the Simpson , you'll love the Hay river trip JD

Its a bit more of a challenge and really a two weeker.

East of Adelaide there are the Grampians, then go north through the national parks in western Vic that offer some 4WD opportunities; then spend some time along the Murray River, further north is Lake Mungo, Broken Hill, Mootawingee NP, White Cliffs, Tibooburra, Sturt NP, west a bit past Cameron corner and up the Rig Rd to Innaminka, out to Coongie Lakes, up to Birdsville. If thats not enough keep going north via the Dig Tree, through various National Parks mentioned in others' posts until you end up at Lawn Hill and eventually the Gulf. Come to think of it, thats a trip with a huge amount of variety and activity - might try it myself some time.
Enjoy,
Val

So what of 1300km of corrugations (a slight exageration)...
Few highlights to match the Simpson- you gotta be jokin..
Oh- I've just realized, you have a Nissan (like Willem)- now there in lies the answer.
