Can someone tell me where the fruit fly inspection is near Ceduna.
How far out of town is it located.
I will be coming down Goog's track and into Ceduna, where else, and I'm blowed if they're getting my greens as they will have been bought in S.A.
Do I need to detour to the east to avoid or not .
And, thanks for advice in advance.

Yep you will have to detour to the east. Look at a Hema Map or RAA Map. There are some tracks shown

That happened to me once. Had a truck full of goodies bought at home(SA) and had to return home due to unforseen circumstancers. So I took some back tracks to miss the Inspection Point at Oodlawirra.

hehehe The must have thought you looked a bit dodgy :-))

We've been through the Ceduna quarantine many times after trips out into the GVD, and they ask us where we've been, we tell them. Never been a problem. Last time was a week ago, and our 6 vehicles were spread out - they recognised it and just waved us through.

Harry,
Yes you do go through the fruit fly block after googs, its between the googs road and Ceduna, which is a coupla k's west of the town, but if you tell them where you have come from they usually let you through, we have been let through twice before.
May help to keep receipt handy for proof of where you purchased your goods, but I guess there will always be the possiblity of getting a pedantic mongrel who is having a bad day and will stick it to you.

Just the answer I was looking for Pesty, I think we'll save the hassles and slip across to the east like Willem suggested.
Thanks guys.

Harry,
The guys that run the Ceduna quarantine are good people. Tell them where you've been, they will let you through.

Harry

Googs track is best done travelling North. Going south you don't need a 4WD you can do it in a Holden.

Ok! I'll be a dick and ask the obvious.

Which way does this GOOGS thingy go. Nth - sth or Sth Nth.

I was always under the impression that it was a one way Sth - Nth.

National Parks prefer people to do it from the south to avoid the head-ons.

You a DICK ??? hahahaha

As Phil said, but you can come down as well, no problems.
Someone in nat. parks, who has probably never been up the track suggests going one way, but you end up in the middle of nowhere and then glendambo, whoopee.
Your choice.

Pesty

I lived on the West Coast for a number of years and have done Goog's Track several times.

I have always done the track heading north. My neighbour did it once in his old Holden Panel Van going south without a problem.

I those days it wasn't a National Park. It was a lease property and the owner of the lease was Goog Denton. He and Dennis Beatty made the track.

If you head north you end up at Malbooma near Tarcoola. You can then drive to Glendambo and from there tour the Gawler Ranges and do a loop back to Ceduna.

Hi Kumunara,

Yes I know the story of Goog Denton, and have done the track a few times myself.
Yes I reckon you could have done it in a ute back then, but now its usually badly chopped up on the southern slopes because some 4wd wankers wont let there tyres down.
Its still a fairly easy trip down from the top, but ending up in Tarcoola doesnt appeal hahaha.
We live in the Mid North so we tend to come in from Gawler ranges and Mt Ive direction, so it suits us best.

Cheers Pesty

So, which way would you do the Simpson or Canning.
National parks wouldn't know if they were Arthur or Martha.

Harry, and to any 'like minded Harry heroes' out there, hope you do decide to take Phil Gs advice. It's sound and logical.

Western Australia is free from many animal and plant pests, diseases and weeds found elsewhere in Australia. Quarantine restrictions apply to the movement of a range of goods between Western Australia and other states and territories, whether they be commercial goods or personal effects. These restrictions are in place to prevent the introduction and spread of many weeds, pests and diseases that affect agriculture, the environment and our way of life.

Honey for example cannot be taken freely into WA because of the possibility of the introduction of disease to the local bee hives etc. A real threat to the industry and the livelyhood of many.
The olive lace bug has been identified and located at Boyanup and inudstry and official are working tirelessly to try and control it to prevent devestation of the olive industry.

I believe that there may also be limitations on the unrestricted import of potatoes into WA in order to protect the local industry from disease.

Even though your 'greens' may have been bought in SA, they too may have been transported or traded by an unscrupulous wholesaler, retailer, or traveller - just like others who may have been tempted to avoid detection.

If you are silly enough to persist with your intention to avoid appropriate inspection and declaration of suspect foodstuffs (and I hope you don't), you are acting in a very un-Australian way and with complete disregard for the very industries that Dept of Agriculture are working to protect. No consideration whatsoever for the likely implications that could devestate the lives and income of many poor devils trying to make a living from scratching in the dirt.

Is it really worth it for a few greens?

Enjoy your trip and travel safetly.

Sorry DIO, But are you for real?
He is buying veg in SA and travelling in SA and for conveneince to the operators the inspection stn is in SA, but he will be a bloody long way from the border, and that is why he will be able to bring his veg through, LEGALLY!
Do you know where Googs track is? Well and truly in SA.
Time to get ya map out sonny!

Gday, Pesty,
In DIO's defence, I think he was simply having a go at the suggestion that you could dodge the Ceduna checkpoint by heading north. On a forum like this, the dodgy characters from out west may smuggle their tomatos into our pristine state :-)))

Yair g'day Dten.
Bit slow here mate. WA pestilence free?
Never heard of "Double U's' (or whatever you call 'em)", and WA phytophthera (?) seems as rampant as our strains.
I was fairly saddened when our DEAD CLEAN bamboo tent poles were confiscated near Kununurra some years ago. Perhaps the bloke (ex farmer from Down South), was a touch over zealous.
Sound familiar?

It's a touchy one D10, but common sense does have a place.
[[ btw, we lived in FNQ when the fruit fly job was on. Can elaborate, if asked]]. Jeff.

I think that there should be an I before your name and a T at the end of it. Read the post properly next time vefore making a comment.

No one is advocating dodging inspection points on a grand scale or being Un Australian but simply trying to avoid doing your dough(tucker) unneccasarily. But as Phil says, try it his way.
