Was down at my local garage today to fuel up and pay me dues and there was a 78 series Troopy up on the hoist. In front of it was a new(it looked like new anyway) gearbox and transfer case sitting on the gearbox jack.
Apparently the driver had the Troopy in reverse but the truck was rolling down a
hill in mud towards a
closed gate. He dropped the clutch to get out of trouble and yanked the gearbox so hard that the casing cracked and the oil spurted out everywhere. T'was a tow job after that.
So much for ' built tough for Australian conditions'.................LOL
Cheers

Now now Willem it could happen to anybody.
It's usually funny when it happens to someone else though. In defence of the Toymota. It is built for Australian conditions not Australian drivers.
How are you old friend. This city life is OK but I am feeling the need for some wide open spaces. A mate from the
Hill sent me some pics of Umberumberka Res overflowing and that has really fuelled the itch.
On the up side I had a nice little flight up to the north east corner of NSW for work. That would not have happened while I was out at the
Hill.

I guess they would have had to move all the broken Nissan motors out of the way- to fit the Toyota onto the hoist !!!!

Last time I was in Alice Sps I went around the wrecking yards looking for some minor parts for the GQ. Couldnt find many Nissan parts. "They just don't break" said one wrecker. Plenty Yota bits around!!!!lol

No Willem,
There are no Nissans in wrecking yard because there is a waiting list for the parts. As soon as they come in they are stripped and sold off.
The Tooyotas on the other hand are there because of accident damage but because there is no demand for parts they just keep piling up.
Oh plus they sell 10 times more Tojo's than Pootrols

Oh dear!
Sounds like Toyota has really under developed the new 78 series.
If the power and torque figures for the TDV8 looks the same as the 4.2TD motor, it's no coincidence. The plan is to leave the driveline (gearbox, axles, etc) untouched and just detune the motor so that it is no more powerful than the outgoing engine.
Smacks of a really cheap way of releasing a "new" model but basically reusing all the same stuff and charging a king sized premium for the entire package.
Toyota should have revised the entire drivetrain to suit the power output characteristics of this new motor. Like perhaps strengthening everything, including the same old weak differentials.

It seems the plan wasn't to leave the driveline untouched at all as the new V8 70 series does apparently have a strengthened gear box. I agree it's the weak diffs they haven't mentioned I'd be concerned with.

Stamps,
What other motor does a 78 series Toyota come with other than the Euro IV emissions compliant TDV8?
It's implied that since this is an Australian spec 78 series, the motor is the new TDV8.
In other markets, Toyota still fit the 4.2TD motor into the 78 series, but not Down Under.
So, since he said it was a 78 series, the assumption that it's the TDV8 will hold true.

No where does it imply that it is the new TDV8,
The new TDV8 is known as a 70 series not a 78 series

The 78 series has been around since 1999 and has had 1HZ 4,2 non turbo, 1HD-FTE 4.2 turbo and 1FZ-FE 4.5 petrol not to ention the new 4.5 td v8 in the current update.

OK, my bad.
Kev is right. The 70 series is the one with the widened front end and the new TDV8 motor. The 78 series is the narrow front with the earlier engines, culminating with the 4.2TD.
So I'll have to retract all my comments about the 70 series, as this was not the new model with the TDV8 engine in it.

The 70 series is a common term for all Toyota 70 series vehicles, IE 75, 76,78 and 79
There is no such thing as a "70" series model Toyota to my knowledge people were labeling the 2007 TD V8 models "The new 70 series" as until release no one knew what the model numbers for this release would be.
The current models with the new TD V8 with the widened front are the 2007 model 76 series (The 4 door model) and the 78 series Troopcarrier and the 79 series Tray.

3.O LITRE DIESEL PROBLEMS
The early 3.0 litre engine was mostly a drama especially in government and ex police owned vehicles. Saying this there are some early models around still running fine and these are mostly
well serviced privately owned vehicles. Some of the symptoms to look for are oil leaks around the front of the sump, oil ingress into the intercooler, air conditioner compressor problems, cracking
suspension mounts, weak rear pan-hard rods,
seat recliner handles loosening and falling off, rear
suspension noise, clutch/dual mass flywheel dramas (see below) early like around the 65 000 km mark, 5th gear splines in the gearbox stripping off when towing or doing a-lot of highway work (this problem is with most Patrol gearbox's and supposed to be rectified after 2002), mass air flow sensor, fuel pumps (on early models 2000) and the biggest problem is pistons blowing. The main piston to blow is number 4 however we have had number 1 go as
well mainly from over fuelling. Accessory belt hydraulic tensioner failing. Usually chopping out the bushes and at $200.00 to replace hurts the pocket. Most patrols have a tendency to drift off to the left and a castor correction plate fitted to the left side usually rectifies this. The Patrol wheel wobble is
well known and after many attempts the underlying problem is still undiscovered. The steel wheel rims are the most probable cause but we come across loose front wheel bearings and scarcely grease packed bearings often on near new vehicles.

Aaah Doug seeing as you now need to make an attack for no reason at all I shall respond.
100 series front end problems ( just ask Des Lexic and others )
Remember the 80 series Front End problems of the 1990's
OR the Troopy Gearbox problems of the same era
OR the bloody rust of the 50 and 60 series Yotas
Them and all other vehicles are just recycled earth mate!

Hi Willem
I have said it all along on this site , its always fine for the TOYOTA owners to bag the bleep e out of us Patrol owners over the
well known 3litre problems and the 5th gear probs , and we cop it on the chin, however as soon as someone mentions anything about the untouchable TOYOTA watch the bullets fire I drive a Nissan because i like Nissans and its my personal choice ..not because Joe Blow thinks i cant afford a TOYOTA...i dont want a TOYOTA..just like TOYOTA owners probly dont want to own Nissans......But when certain people resort to racism and other snide comments its really getting beyond a joke .....so to all you idiots out there that cant take a joke or handle comments about a certain type of vehicle i say GROW UP and get a life ....or else just F*** OFF and go find some other
forum to spit your dummies on Hell we are all supposed to be grown up adults here ..i havent heard this much dribble since i was a toddler in kindergarten ...hahaha
Anyway Cheers everyone and have a great day......Dave
