As you obviously all know, a calzone is a pizza folded in half (A bit like a big cornish pasty but Italian). I was wondering if anyone has ever tried cooking one on a barbie plate, or on a grill over hot coals, turning it over of course to cook both sides. I can't see any reason why it shouldn't work with a bit of experimentation but wondered if anyone has been there already.

Let me say I have never tried this. But would it work better in a camp oven.

Maybe put it flat on a trivet in the bottom for a while then take out the trivet fold the calzone up, sit it on the bottom of the oven and put a big pile of coles on top to brown the pastry.

Making it up as I go along but that is where I would start.

I reckon the camp oven would be the go.........but you may need to leave the lid slightly ajar to let some of the moisture escape....perhaps....but don't really know, do I cos I'm also making this up as I go??? LOL

I'm lookiing for a lazy way (as usual), if I am goingto use the camp oven I'll make a normal pizza! I was hoping to use a wire grid thingy I made which I use to cook bacon and toast over the fire, it sticks out from a metal pole hammered in next to the fire, the pole also carries a couple of arms for billys and sits there all the time so no effort.

I suspect this will be tough, but not impossible, to do. Pizza ovens are hot and it is all around heat. Any dirct method like on a grill would likely fail. If you get it wrong the dough would not be cooked all the way through. I think your best bet will be a camp oven in a trivett.

I suppose there is only one way to find out .... guess what I'll be doing this weekend! Yep, watching the Wallabies on TV with a beer while eating part raw and part burnt calzone!

maybe you could do it like an omlette. Cook it a bit, then fold it and give it a flip towards the end of cooking! Sounds good though. All the best.

Personally I have never done it but if I was I would do it in a fry pan covered in al foil and turn it afet 20 minutes.

Greydemon,
I thought that we were the only other Calzone lovers that go camping but you have proved me wrong!
We love our weekly Calzone and during a 4 month trip around part of Oz last year we made a couple of them around the campfire.
Best success will be using a camp oven with a trivet in the bottom that is preheated with nice coals.
We use Pampas shortcrust pastry and make the Calzone so it ends up looking like a big cornish pasty.
You need to put coals on top of the camp oven after burying it in a nice bed of coals but it will need flipping over after maybe 20 minutes or so depending on the heat of the fire.
We've found it a labour intensive meal to make so maybe it's too much effort for most campers but we find the effort worthwhile when the Calzone is dished up with a nice sauce poured over it and sprinkled with parmesan cheese. The most important thing is to make sure you have a nice glass of red wine to go with the lovely meal in the true Italian way...
