We're planning a trip as above. My gps tells me the quickest way is from
Toowoomba to the Three Ways, turn right and then turn onto the BuchananHiway and the via the Buntine to
Halls Creek. Does any body know anyhing about the Buchanan and is this the best way being a compromise of dirt and tar.
Thanks, Geoff

You Can go all the way by tar if you want. Go north as far as Katerine then go west via the Victoria Hwy its tar all the way. I all depends your own needs and how you are setup. You could also go south from the 3 ways to Alice than accross the Tamani to
Halls Creek.

We've done that twice, we decided we'd like a bit of a change of scenery. The Tanami is also a definite possibility, looking at options other than hiway all the way.

We came
home that way from top of WA in 2005. No problems. Even found a little off road and camped overnight on the way. A normal dirt road, some
places real good, knew why a bit further up the track as we saw the
grader. Some
places rocky. The only problem we had was that we got stuck behind a cattle road train who was going slower than us but could not see us because of the dust. We could have called over the CB to see if he heard us but we just slowed down, had a drink and let him get ifurther in front of us, to avoid the dust.
We were coming
home via the Tanami but the road was closed due to wet conditions at the time, so this was the quickest way
home to
Brisbane.

I have been twice on the Buchanan. Once in 2wd once in 4wd. It was a good road both times and camped at
Jasper Gorge both times. It is subject to weather like all those roads in the north but they usually get fixed by the time us tourerists want to go. Not for us but for the stations and the road trains that need to get in and take the cattle out.

Geoff
Was in that area Monday to Wednesday this week. Went to Lajamanu, Top Springs, Kalkarindji and Yarralin.
Buchanan Hwy is a dirt road but you could drive a
sedan on it.
Buntine Hwy is bitumen but only one lane. It is also not a problem but get off the road when you see road trains coming.
Fuel can be obtained from the Aboriginal Communities in the area and also from Top Springs Hotel.

One of my maps shows a road (track) from Lajamanu to
Warrego near
Tennant Creek. Anyone travelled it and know if it would be quicker than going west to east from Kalkarindji, up the Buchanan, down the Stuart to the Barkly?

G'Day Geoff C, We did the Buchanan and Buntine September 05, and found it allright. Probably the only thing we would say is to watch your fuel situation. We travelled west to east and were going to fill up at Kalkaringi but they dont sell fuel thursdays from memory. We are also from
Toowoomba. Cheers Damien and Cheryl.

Crow mentioned Alice and the Tanami , from 3 Ways,
well If i qwere going that way then I would head out to
