HF earthing - the fun begins

I'm trying to setup a new HF (Barrett 2050 + 910 autotune Outback pack) and have a few earthing questions.

Can I have an RF earth going to the same point as my 12v -ve earth?

Basically I've run a 20mm^2 cable from the (aux) battery 12v +ve down the chassis rail to a fuse box in the back right panel of the Patrol (where the jack would normally be). I've created a -ve earth point by scraping off paint around the body. Is it ok for me to use that same negative earth point also as the RF earth for the radio?

I've earthed the 910 autotune from its mount on the rear wheel carrier to the chassis. Should I be running a braided earth cable between the antenna earth (chassis) and the radio RF earth (body)?

And where is a good place to get braided cable (Brisbane - bayside). Or can I just get some coax and butcher it?

I got a little impatient earlier on and plugged it all together using my current earth points (although I ran it using the supplied power cable directly to the battery since my 20mm^2 cable isn't yet live). I tried to listen in on the 8pm (Brisbane time) vks737 sked on ch2 but couldn't really make anything out. I could pickup the occasional word, but mostly it was static. I could get one of the Radio Aus (?) stations fairly clearly. I'm hoping my problem is earth related, since I really would rather be able to use vks737 than radio aus.

Anyway, any pointers would be appreciated.

Less than three weeks to go - Yikes!

Geoff, yes you can use that point, and also connecting the chassis and body is a good way to go.
Does the radio tell you that it's tuning Ok ? If it does then there's no major earthing problem.
Radio Oz is a LOT more powerful than 737, and some nights you might not hear much of them, especially in Brizvagas.
For example, I am west of Toowoomba when I first start to hear the early morning skeds. Can't hear much of them on the mobile at home.
However, I can hear most of it on my base setup at the same place.
If you need more braid just strip the coax, makes an excellent earth braid for HF.
BTW any electronic rust prevention systems might bugger up HF receive, a fact lost on many.

Thanks for all that.

Yes, it said it was tuning ok. The radio says it gets a VSWR(?) of anything from 1.0:1.0 to about 1.6:1.0 when I was paying attention. Mostly it seemed to be about 1.2 or 1.3 : 1.0.

I planned to ask about the rust prevention systems (later). I read in the archives about somebody who had a megapulse (I think) and it seemed to be interfering with the radio. I don't have electronic antirust at present. But would like to add it. I guess I'll need a kill-switch or some such for when I want to use the radio.

So I take it the further bush I go the better reception will get. Is that because it just happens to be better for atmospheric bounce, or is it because there is lots of "noise" in cities? Kinda makes it hard to be sure it is all working before I go though. We're off to the Simpson in three weeks.

Geoff, less interference in the bush, and a number of other tech factors.
You could try selcalling a mate to see how your radio works, but be sure to choose the right channel for that distance and time of day. Or you could try a beacon call to one of the bases (same rules as above).
Try using the radio (receive) with and without you being mobile. From memory the later Barretts have an excellent noise reduction system.
Good luck with it.

Geoff,
When I was in Brisbane, I could get Ch Towers and Alice Springs VKS bases no worries from Camira.

Ch Towers Sked 1600-1630 Bris Time
Alice Springs 1630-1730

Stu, I can get them mobile on the way to Briz, but soon lose them in the big smoke.

Thanks Stu050. I'll try them tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

I have got Ch Towers while going over the Jindalee Bridge on Centenary Highway, Alice Springs while sitting on the driveway at home, and Adelaide while going past the Entertainment Centre at Boondall. Maybe 4 x 5 both times.

Maybe you need to put your 9350 on the Bullbar, and get it radiating properly:))
