Hi all, done reasonable amount of heavy 4wdriving around Oz in a Nissan Patrol and now a Mitsubishi Triton- beleive me the Triton goes just as deep in as the Patrol used to, you just have to drive it better/smarter! Sick of the tent- or should I say our backs are sick of the tent. Getting older and slower so looking to purchase a pop-top camper trailer. We realise the limitations of offroading with these so it will be more of a base camp at stations etc, and we will head out from there. Yes we will keep the tent for overnight stays in the rougher country ( unfortunately )!!!! We have read many comments and comparisons and are currently looking for a Gloldstream offroad. Looking to the secondhand market. Our question is where the older Goldstreams made better/ stronger than the 2005+ range. Reason for the question is we heard tell the later model had staples instead of screws in the cupboards and where generally not as sturdy. Because of this we are currently looking at a 1998 Goldwing. Can anyone shed any light on this. Not really interested in a Jayco now because of all the negative feedback and owners selling/trading these vans!
Cheers.

We only have a basic camper trailer but its big enough to carry an inner spring queen size mattress. That, is our biggest priority.

Hi Krissy,

We have just ordered a brand new Goldstream Storm. We dealt with one of the owners at the dealership here in Perth and he advised us that they are actually built with screws and not staples. We did the whole, Jayco v Coromal and from our question on here we were advised to go Goldstream, so glad we did.

The finish in them is fantastic and the quality compared to the others is out of this world. I think it comes down to what you like. If you find a second hand one which is the layout you want, why not go with it, the only difference really would be the price.

From what I understand there is no difference. I also spoke to a Coromal person and he even said the Goldstream was a better van overall.

We cannot wait to get ours, it is approx a 4 month wait - grrr.

Hope this helped.

Thanks Nicole,
Good to hear about the quality of the Goldstream and how excited you are getting yours. Have you heard if the older models are just as good as the newer ones?

Is this your first campervan?? Where are you intending to go when you get it?
Thanks again for replying, this forum is really great!
Cheers

Hi
I have looked at a few goldstream campers and the late 90s models do look very good as well. Well made quality. Another one to look for is a 'golf slipstream'.
I have one and love it. It is a 1996 off road and is similar to the goldstream. Lovely fitout and independant suspension, alluminuin frame and so on, also very good quality and strong chasis for off road. The golf slipstreams are no longer made ( stopped around 2000). There are not alot around. The older golfs ( 80s models) I dont like, however the 96 on ones are worth a good look if you find one. Good luck with the goldstream as they appear to be a good unit as well.

Golf are a brand on their own. They still make golf caravans, however stopped making campertrailers in about 2000. The 96 on ones are very high quality and very well made for off road use. Because they were very expensive when new and the company is not as big as the others there are not so many around , but you still see them come up on ebay and trading post accasionally. They seem to keep their price as well, similar to goldstream good quality. I like the jayco camper, but they are not the qaulity or the build of the goldstream offroad or later model golfs.

Hi Krissy,

We looked at a couple of the older models, and to me they looked the same and had the same build quality. They guy showed us the different ones and then took us to the new ones.

The difference in price was about $7000 dollars between the second hand and new. We decided on the new one as we are planning a family in the next year or so, so we want to be prepared and not give up a wonderful van to have to get a bigger one so soon.

The independant suspension is an additional cost. The only down fall to the goldstream we found was that everything was extra including the off road pack which did not include the independant suspension which was about $1000 on top of the $2500 off road.

Also the protective flooring was extra and a few other things which you think are included are not. So be careful there and make sure you work to a budget. We got the basics first that needed to be done to the van during construction and then have opted to get the extras later when we feel we either need them or want them.

All in all ours cost approx $32,000 so we will be using it heaps. Our first trip is to Albany in the south west and then to Esperance and next year we are heading to Monkey Mia, Coral Bay and Kalbarri for a couple of weeks. In a couple of years we are hoping to take 6 months off and do a bigger trip half way round the country (well as far as we can go and get back in 6 months)

Were is your first destination?

Sounds like you have a winner on your hands :)

We will be going to the Gawler Rangers, River Murray mouth perhaps. Our 4WD club has a lot of trips, mainly weekends, but we want to take a few weeks off later in the year and just travel somewhere!
We have been busy renovating our bathroom (because of a leak), so my partner has taken off holidays to do that. So one we both have some decient time to take, we will be off.
I bet you cant wait to get your van. When are you expecting it?

It will be nice to leave some things in there without packing everything up.
I just cant wait to cook in one, and sit at the table to eat. Although saying that, when we go away with the club, most of us sit around the fire and eat. There are a few that go to their campers/caravans and eat, so I think we will have to be one of those, especially for the first few times :)

Hope all goes well when you get it :)
Cheers

Hi Krissy,

We have recently purchased a new 2007 Goldstream Star 2 in the offroad package and it is great.

Under the skin the walls are double sided ply and woodwork is glued and screwed and is of a very high quality. They are dear - ours was approx $10,000 more than a Jayco but we feel the better quality is noticeable.

The offrad package is capable of coping with mild offroad conditions but it is not suitable for extreme stuff. We find it better to use as a base and then explore from there just with the car.

I don't know a lot about the slightly older models but thought a bit of current feedback might help you.

Thank you.
We want to do the same and use the van as a base camp and maybe even take the dreaded tent if we decide to stay long in the rugged stuff.
I know the Goldstream costs more, but it does look worth it.

We may look into a new one. We have 3 kids, but 2 are older and work on weekend or when we go away, so it just leaves the younger 10 year old to travel with us, so we just want a medium size. I looked on the website and yours looks great! Did it take long to get?
Someone said they have independant suspension, compared to other models having leaf springs.....thats a good thing :)

I hope I am as happy as you soon when we finally make our purchase
Thanks
Kris :)
