I have one, they are ideal for touring and modifying as you just drill a few holes and bolt things on. They aren't that comfortable, ie could do with more legroom and the cabin is noisy. I wouldn't swop it for the world, absolutely love it.
Purchased in 2002, still on the same tyres, had to replace clutch master cylinder and fuel injection spring. Servicing is cheap compared to our old Freelander.
Other owners wave to you, either in jubilation or sympathy!
The 2007 model is a bit more refined with better seats and aircon, but they have removed the old air vent flaps under the windscreen.

No reliability, no comfort, good off road ability if it goes long enough, plenty of mods needed, long distance touring is good with ear plugs, what else can you say ??
If you're a pom, you'll love it !!!!!!!!!

They have very good ground clearance and that's about it. A good mate of
mine bought one in 04 and we've been out to a few
places together. He always said that it was the most capable 4WD out of the 'box'. Trouble is he spent around 20 grand to get it to the state he was confident with it to go touring.
I'm probably biased though, as I have been driving L/Rovers for the last 28 years with work, would NOT waste my money on one.
Cheers
Shawn

Although i don't have a Defender, i know a few guys with them, i haven't seen any problems from their fenders that i haven't seen on the other makes i go touring with.
They are a vehicle that people either love or hate, i love
mine (Disco) and i'm not a brand loyal person, if it gave me trouble it would be gone.
They rattle, there noisy, but have comfotable seats for long trips, but if your over 6' leg room maybe a problem.
Best thing is to drive one to see if you like or not, i've driven a few and find them OK, in fact because of the good run we've had with our Disco we are thinking of getting a new 07 Defender.
Oh and you don't need to add many accessories to them as mentioned above, i think that's a bit of an exaggeration.
Baz.

Baz, I don't get on here as much as some to seek recognition, but when I do DON'T call me a liar!! What I said was not an exaggeration. He imported parts from the UK (larger intercooler being one thing from memory), lowered the gearing and did quiet a few other modifications to his wagon. As stated spent/modified until he was confident in its touring ability.

Shawn Shawn, seems Redback was making the point that you don't need to spend $20000 on your Landrover to get it set up for touring - the fact that your mate has wasn't disputed at all. Have a drink, not a dummy spit!

This is our second and our experience has been good. Plenty of outback/remote travel, very capable vehicle and as Redback said, no more/less trouble than many other makes.
If you are looking for value for money than you at least need to have a good look at Defenders, especially if you want a capable off-road vehicle.
The brunt of many jokes, but at the end of the day they are still going strong......Treat them
well and they'll do the same....

Bobthe,my son & his partner wanted one so they shopped around bought it when they found the right one.Now they paid around 23k for it & 18months later they have spent around 6k just to keep the thing on the road but they love it for its ability off road (4 wheel driving) not in the workshop that is.Do your homework on them as i would never want to own one for any reason, but that is just my opinion.
Cheers Bob.

There are two types of people in this world, those who own/owned a Land Rover and those who haven't. Myself, falling into the first category (owned) say go for it. I loved my Land Rover and its unique personality. I have had friends with 110's in the past and the all had little to no problems with them (apart from some leaking oil in the older ones. If it stopped leaking, you knew it needed oil!!). They are virtually unstoppable and can go anywhere. Perfect for a couple but would advise on making it a family tourer as they can be somewhat uncomfortable on longer drives.
Enjoy
Dave
