hello all
I am currently having problems with my Toyota Surf, but first allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Marcello and we as a family have recently moved to Australia,
Adelaide
(nine months ago, wow time flies) from Zimbabwe. in January of this year an opportunity arose for mr to purchase my first 4X4. So on a limited budget, I bought an imported 1994 Toyota surf 3ltr turbo diesel with the 1KZ-TE motor (166K).
The problem I am experiencing at the moment is that out of a full thank of Diesel which is 65 litres, I am only getting about 450 kilometres out of it which relates to about 7km/ltr (approx 14ltrs/100km). now from my understanding of the performance stats on the Surf I should be getting a lot more than that. I also seem to be losing a considerable amount of power as the engine reaches its normal operating temperature.
So I was wondering if anyone out there has had a similar experience and is there a solution to the problem?
BTW, I have checked the normal obvious things like leaks, done a service and changed all filters and set correct tire pressures. I would like to get it into a Diesel specialist for a full diagnostic, but not having lived here too long I am not sure who to take it to.
any helpful suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks
Marchy

Hi Ya Marchy, youcan
check the directory and it may have a guide to where you are located for a diesel mechanic. I could be wrng but it sounds like a faulty injectors and or pump. A diesel mechanic should track it down promptley. Good way to
check if it is injectors is by looking in the rear veiw mirror whilst flooring it and seeing how much smoke is pouring out of the exhaust pipe, or the safer methid get someone to follow you and observe how much smoke is coming out of the pipe. or try injector cleaner regulary.
Regards Chris

An easier option to start with, is to use Flashlube for diesels.
I add 50ml to every tankful of diesel and see how it goes. I have been using this stuff in the GQ for a while now and fuel usage is under 12/100 which isnt bad for a 4.2lt diesel.
Cheers

Hi Willum , yes its true you've sussed me out I'm not the brightest star, and as for the name spell its just a term of endearment, lighten up old boy..............
as for the car its now back to the Toyo {90series} I'm just a disgruntled ex Patrol owner who's still peed about being let down by Mr Nissan, why so touchy ?

Do I know you? Its probably not your real name either.
Can't you think of anything better to do than bag others' vehicles.
It does get a tad boring the Nissan Toyota thing. Maybe you can contribute to the Froum in better ways than just having a go at me hoping I will respond. Most of the time I do respond. And I do get annoyed at carping johnnies.
Why don't you become a Member and show your face instead of hiding beyond anonymity. I have made lots of new friends through Exploroz. You are not going about it the right way to become a friend. But then again, there are limits to how many friends one can have.

Willem, I apologise you've obviously taken me the wrong way, sorry mate I wrongly presumed you had a good sense of humour and were up for a bit of light hearted banter, and thats ALL it was, it seems I made a mstake trying to socialise with you ,I wont make that mistake again,
apologies, you wont hear from me anymore,
Dave

Thats OK Dave. Apology Accepted
I have a very good sense of humour but repetition of the same joke becomes a little bit silly.
Anyway thats all in the past now. We may start afresh.

hello Chris and Willem thanks for getting back to me.
I have monitored the exhaust and even under heavy driving it does not seem to blow a great deal of smoke so I can only assume that the pump might be faulty. I have been using flash lube ever scince I got the 4X4 and during the past month or so the problem has started.
I guess I will have to look for a good Diesel specialist to have it put on the Dyno to see what is wrong with it. I was hoping to go away this long weekend but I dont want to spend all my money on fuel.
I will keep you posted as to what the out come is.
thanks again for your help and suggestions.

12.9 - 13.5 was normal for
mine. (1KZTE Auto)
Big trailer and it would do 25L/100
They are in indiret injected diesel and not super efficient.

Hi Marchy
Just sold my 1994 surf with 3l turbo disell 1kz motor your fuel consamption sounds about wright if its an automatic my took about 12.5l to 100k on freeway emplty and about 14 in city. dont fall into the trap to do your injectiors or pump unless you have a definate problem, i have been tald that my injectors needed doing that my fuel was up spend about $700 no difrent to fuel consamtion or power increse as for your luck of power the best way do diagnose is to do compression
test on the motor. before that have a look at the turbo open the air intake pipe just before turbo and speen turbo with your hand and see if the litte fan touchess the walls if so you need turbo rebuild
check for oil after the turbo in metal air pipe going to the intake manafold if its exesive amount your turbo need rebuild or your rings are worn and you have exesive blow by and luck of compression so back to compresion
test it should not cost much then $250- $300. hope i have been much help
mark
