G'day all, just booking some accommodation for our trip & would like some input on which was the best or worst caravan park to stay in while in Derby.
We've booked our time at Cape Leveque but are staying in Derby before & after the visit up there.
Good or bad I'd like to know please.
Thanks.

I think there is only one, called the Kimberley Entrance. We stayed there last year and it was fine, walking distance to shops, pool etc. Friendly management, quite helpful.

As per above there are 2 but one is advertised as being adult only. We stayed at the Kimberley Entrance one. Couple of the ablution blocks have seen better days but the new one is ok. Good butchers shop in town and cryavacs at a good price and the beef is excellent.

Rod forgot to add get hold of the short cut map from the caravan Pk in Derby for the trip up the Dampier Peninsula to the Cape. We only found out about it after we got to Derby via Broome and Cape Leveque. Thus we copped the dreaded 84k of the worst road in Aus. Well it seemed that way early June 2006. Tip when staying at Cape Leveque watch out if they want to put you on the cliff's edge non powered area the wind can just about blow you away. We were in the lea of the dune in the powered area and saw what the wind was doing to the poor buggers on the exposed cliff face. Good view but oh those winds.

Ta Dunc, we have booked a powered site, so will have to see where they put us, do you know if they can supply the same mud map from up the cape for the return journey? we are looking at spending our 2 days somewhere after we leave Broome & arrive at the cape, somewhere between the 2, any suggestions? There seems to be a few camping spots on the maps on the trip nth along the coast.

Rod we just went straight from Broome into Cape Laveque/Kooljiman. Most people here would suggest staying at Middle Lagoon if not in preference to the Cape, but also stay there as well. You may be lucky to get a copy of the map from the booking office at Cape Leveque if not why not phone the van park in Derby and see if they can fax/email or post you a copy.

My Hema Kimberley Map shows the track and it starts/finishes near the Beagle Bay turn off and comes out at Bedunburra. When we were there it wasn't sign posted so we missed the turn off. (Wife also will not allow me to venture of main tracks unless in convoy, female security thing).

With respect to other camping areas look at the areas between James Price Point and Willie Creek. The map shows this as the Lurujarri Aboriginal Heritage Trail.

In hindsight I think we should of spent more time around that area but we were booked into Kooljiman so had to be there on the said day.

If your going to do the GRR there is quite a good Travellers Guide booklet on the GRR and Kalumburu Rd's including the Plateau available at either the Kununurra or Derby/Broome Tourist Info Ctrs. Use it in conjunction with your maps and it's very handy. Cost $4 last year.

If you dont want to stay in Derby, Willare is OK. Shady, lawn, informal, nice pool, good meals, basic shop and fuel, and the magnificent Fitzroy 1km away, which was still flowing strong about a month ago.

Stayed there a couple of nights in early May. Only drawback was the noise of the generator.
