Had to do a excavation for a water tank yesterday, had a reference point given to me on a peg, must be 2.350 below this mark, its critical!!!. " No worrys mate" I've done this sort of work for thirty years!!" Guess what i was 50mm out!! on one side, got the phone call this morning from the tank builder who had travelled for three hrs to get there, ITS NOT RIGHT!!. My immediate reaction was Bull ..c..t, ", i checked the depth with the laser Ten times!, it can't be wrong!,

Drove back up there, to find it was wrong, How!!!! idon't know. But have accepted the abuse, humiliation, dented pride, How long do you punish your self for stupid mistakes?, when your young it hurts, but you get over it quick, Now its like a endless throb. Stuffed if i know?.

Axle,
Funny that....... we are fighting with the head contractor at the moment because of extra excavation due to a trench needing to be benched.........
Funny thing is I had to put together a 32 page report the week before for workcover because our workers dug a trench for which we did bench at 1.5m deep........ Problem is they left about 2 wheelburra loads of material around a peg. This material was 800mm away from the edge of the trench.
The project manager made me write the report and send it to workcover. He now does not want to pay for it. :(

Being a retired (tired) surveyor I would say that if you want to get accuracy to less than 50 mm use a level and staff as against laser especially over longer distances, as a slight error in the laser can produce quite big errors when transferred to the level reading.

Only 1 hr ago I measured, checked and re-checked the measurement for the last bit of aluminium I needed to edge the new fridge slide/drawer box after carpeting it. Measured 86cm exactly on the steel ruler. No problems. Cut the darned thing and was about 12cm too short. Bullocks. Remeasured again, 86cm. What on earth. Then I remeasured on the other side of the ruler and realised it was 98cm and I hadn't read the 8 and 9 around the right way!

Not with the dire consequences you had Axle, and nobody knew until now, but still makes me wonder how it happened when I was being so thorough!

Axle, is it possible there was something wrong with your laser??

I did a similar thing except I forgot the golden rule "add the hundred"....

When usung a tape measure sometimes you can't get "to the millimeter" because the little thingamejig at the end of the tape is loose, so you need to start at 100mm.

A mate of mine who is a pipe fitter says this is always happening at work and he has seen some massive dummy spits when a bloke cuts a heap of pipes and then realises he didn't "add the hundred"

hehehehehehe

Silly question, I know, BUT shouldn't it be "take away the hundred"?

Muzzgit

Mate, that little thingamejig at the end of the tape is meant to be loose.

It moves in/out by 1mm. That is to allow for the thickness of the thingamejig when measuring either from the inside of it, or the outside.

Yes you are right "subtract the 100" it should be.

Banjo.........
If you have seen some of the tape measures going around in places where I have worked, the doohickie thing on the end moves more than one millimeter. I have worked in sheetmetal sheds where your tape is everyones tape and they let them run in from full stretch and it stuffs up the ends.

I think it is a competition to see who can break the most gear,,,,tape measures, tin snips whatever. Another reason why they don't run the tape thru the fingers and stop it near the end is they get a lot of cuts from tin snips and these cut into fingers really easily when the tape is running back flat out

Admitting that you aren't perfect is the start of true self understanding.
We all make mistakes. Sometimes embarrassingly in public. Sometimes it costs us money, but worse is when it costs us friends or family.
You made a mistake, it's over, move on. Next time you'll know better.

Had a similar problem, I was operating a forklift in a factory where they had dug up part of the floor. Concretors couldn't work out why the laser level was telling them they were way out. After numerous different readings, they figured out the warning strobe light on my forklift was throwing the laser out. Turn off the fork, perfect levels.
You weren't excavating beside the local disco were ya Axle? :)

Hi Axle,

I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. That is your wifes and kids job for the rest of their lives is to give you grief over it.

It is a fact of life, that when they are old enough, they will tell you when you are wrong and not let you live it down. he he he...

Axle I have been able to discover phone cables much more accurately than Dial before You Dig. They are hopeless, I just needed a good soldering iron and heat shrink. Afterwards.
