G'Day Eric, We always used to use super cheap lights . Before we went on our three month trip we lashed out and bought the primus flouro's. After owning these we are extremely happy with their light output and the are more efficient than the cheap ones, and you can replce the bulbs in them if you have any dramas. Cheers Troopytrek.

Hi Eric
i have a versa light which is great and doesn't use much power (..8amp i think) but there is one advertised on this site a yellow torpedo light which only uses .45 amp the only down side to these is that there is no shield on the light so when u hang it up in the camp or using it as a work light u always have it shining in your eyes.

Hi Mattie

Our Torpedo lights are supplied with a self adhesive silver shield that can be fitted, I recommend a piece of al foil inserted into the cover so it can be removed when not needed.

Regards

Derek.

Hi Derek
thanks for that we were camping with a friend at the Carnarvan Gorge a couple of weekends ago just after i had seen them on the web site. I had 2 things i didn't like u have cleared one the other was the hanging hook has a tendancy to slip along the cord. It sounds like a good light with replacable components and low amperage and compact.

Hi Mattie

Yes the hook is a loose stainless steel hook, I have zip tied my hook in place.

Regards

Derek.

I would have to agree that if you had a choice of only one light, the EvaKool Torpedo is the one to own.

It comes with a cigarette style plug with internal fuse and a short adapter lead with cigarette style socket on one end and battery clamps on the other, for use if you don't have a cigarette style 12 volt socket to plug into.

Very robust and compact lamp which puts out as much light as a 100watt incandescent globe.

"No association with EvaKool or their distributors".

Want a cheap and reliable, low current draw (less than 1 amp) then get yourself a normal 240v batten fitting, Nelson 12v CFL globe, plastic(PET) peanut butter/jam jar and a woolies extension lead.
Cut off the 240v plug from both ends of the lead fit your 12v plug of choice to one end and the batten fitting to the other, make a hole in the plastic lid of the jar to fit the collar on the batten fitting and it is finished. Less than $20 and a bleep load of light.
I fitted a magnet to the base of the batten fitting so it could stick to the vehicle or a tent pole.
Another option is to buy a bunnings type trouble light and change the globe and plug to 12v items.

Yes I made one these many years ago but the old jar used to break on all the corrugations.

You must have been using a glass jar, the PET bottles/jars don't break even when dropped out of a moving vehicle onto the road at 80k when full!! Don't ask how I know;-))

They are available at the bigger Bunnings stores or any electrical wholesaler should be able to get them.
They look exactly the same as a 240v one, but are made to run direct on 12v.

Hi Eric
I lashed out and bought one of the expensive Pirahna lights.
Did not want to be let down by another cheapy in the middle of the nightgt.
A bit expensive I know, but draws less than 1 amp, really rugged and attaches to the battery or has a merrit / ciggy lighter plug converter, you choose. Has a nice long chord as well.
Broke but happy

OOps,

In my post above, I mentioned this adapter lead. Now that you have mentioned it Gareth, I think I have confused myself with the accessory adapter lead that came with my Pirahna light, rather than the Torpedo. Sorry folks for the mistake.

The Pirahna light is also very good and is identical to the Versalite. (both made at the same factory)

I have two versalites and they work fine. As for hooking to the battery I have two weather proof external cig outlets i just plug in.

I have seen similar set ups like travellers and they give plenty of light and are cheap to set up.

If you want low power consumption from your battery these things are fantastic!

I use 2 of them in my camper. They draw less than 200 milli Amps (0.2A)

I use a Col-lite and have found it to be excellent... cost around $100.

Draws 0.8a and gives off heaps of light..

I have used mine on several camping trips including the cape for the past 2 - 3 years and it works a treat.

Made on the Sunshine Coast and built nice and strong.
