I posted about a week ago regarding Nissan being cagey in replacing a leaking rear main seal.
Well it turned out I had no problems and they replaced it. However I now have a shudder when moving off in first gear. Now, this shudder may have been there before but was almost un-noticable but now it is just damn unpleasant.
It seems to be getting steadily worse almost by the hours driving round town so I took it back and had a mechanic
test drive it. It was actually the chap who did the work on the rear main who confirmed clutch shudder and suggested I needed a new clutch.
Apparently shudder is caused by hot spots or high spots on the clutch plate and is not covered by warranty and could not possibly have been caused by the work recently undetaken. Quote to replace $1600. I am not silly enough to pay that but I have done a
site search and it appears that most vehicles that develop a clutch shudder while still under warranty have had them fixed under warranty. Is this the case or is the clutch a "consumable" part?
Should never have let the buggers at it!

Clutch's generally aren't covered by warranty but a good dealer will attempt to look after its customers. Make sure they have the flywheel surface ground otherwise it will be a waste of time doing the job. I would also find out if they are going to replace the whole clutch kit including pressure plate and release bearing or only the clutch plate. Some dealers will only replace the clutch plate.
Food for thought.

If Nissan fixes it under warranty then as long as it works fine and lasts I don't care which bits they replace. If I am paying then it will be done by my mechanic the right way
Cheers for the
feedback

Your shudder is possibly caused but oil on the clutch plate caused by the leaking rear main seal . Its a wonder the mechanic never mentioned this possibility .

If that where the case then I expect it would have shuddered more before the seal was replaced rather than after. If it was contamination on the clutch plate would I expect this to get better over time?

I have never seen them improve once they are contaminated by oil and get to the shudder stage , usually only a new clutchplate , pressure plate , thrust bearing and possibly a spiggot bearing and the replacing of the rear main seal usually gets them back to the way they were :)

Hi Steve, I really didn't want ANYBODY pulling out the gearbox let alone Nissan. Thay had another look and decided to replace the main seal. I didnt realise how that foam thing fitted into the equation but now that its missing its obvious. You gotta ask why they didn't remove it on the first trip in. Surely that would have shown where the "leak" was.
I'm just so damn busy at the moment I don't have the time I would like to double guess the "experts". So now it looks like the car will be off the road again soon. Dammit! Wish I had read your post before they got there hands on it.

That's bullcrap about clutches not being covered under warranty, I've had several replaced under warranty on Toyota's due to clutch shudder.

Yep,
We had a 99 and 02 luxe both had clutch kit put through them at around the 28,000k mark, and my new October 05 model is having the same done next week with 42,000k on the clock (although I have been complaining about it since 10.000k)
All covered under warranty.
With the 02 luxe the local dealer (Madills in Noosa) told us that the clutch was a wearable item and not covered under the warranty. $1200 quoted to repair. Local mechanic quoted $750. Toyota dealer in Nambour quoted $650 so we booked it in,
had it done and when we picked it up and the dealer told us no charge, the vehicle is still under warranty.
We buy two luxes every 3 years and service them religiously. none of our business goes to Madills nor will it ever.
Both Nambour and Currimundi Toyota dealers on the sunshine coast I find are very helpful.
Scott.
