was away for the long weekend in the w.a. wheatbelt and trolled thru the posts on my return and take this opportunity to share my
views.
my 3g service performed faultlessly during the whole journey, and the stay in
Harrismith, for both phone & data with the imate jasjam.
a mate, who had a Nokia on 3g, could not get a signal in
Harrismith.
therefore it seems that not all handsets are equal !!!!
(a couple of locals claimed their 3g coverage is not as good as CDMA.)

The Nokia would be on the 2.5G GSM network (promoted as 3G) or is not with Telstra at all.
There are currently no Nokia phones offered on Telstra NextG network (6120 Classic coming soon I hear).
The JasJam is on Telstra NextG.
Therein may lie the difference!

I was looking at the possibility of going next G with a Nokia and was told that their phone will be out around the end of July.

Howie
I have a nextg phone have had varying reception.
Went to Ngukurr today and have very good receptions but at
Beswick recently could get no reception.
A Telstra Tech informed me that the roll out of the network is still happening and that once the CDMA network is closed the NextG network should be operating at full power with far better coverage and performance than the CDMA. I will wait and see.

I've now got both a Nokia 6225 CDMA and LG TU500 NextG. I'll be running them both on a trip to WA starting Friday. Be interesting to see the comparison but only academic due to CDMA closing down.

Hi Howie,
Guess you were a bit early for the
wildflowers at
Harrismith, but how were the wild times? LOL!
As stated earlier, the Next G is on 850MHz (Telstra only), whereas the 3G is on 2.5GHz (several operators). Different networks, slightly different technology.

My NextG phone cost me
well over $2k this morning because I couldn't make calls when needed, despite the phone saying it had full reception.
I was able to use a cdma (standing in the same location) to make the calls.
Not a happy camper.

Bugger.
That's what I was planning on getting....
BTW, was your CDMA a Kyocera or some other.
My Kyocera has been brilliant, often working where other phones would not. I'll be sad to see the end of the network for that reason.

My CDMA was a nokia. Developed a bit of a fondness for them - have probably had half a dozen in various guises.
The LG is, I'm told, one of the better NextG phones presently available. My brother-in-law has a Samsung & we often argue over who has the worse reception. At least the LG has a car kit (though the antenna connection is a passive boost, or whatever they call it. Not a hard connection anyway).

I think there's a lot of confusion between 3G and NextG.
Totally different.
Only Telstra have nextG and anything else (other than CDMA which is on it's way out) is useless in the bush.
Cheers

I've have today received my third Jasjam from Telstra since December. They had my phones for nearly four months of that time . Since 5pm I have spent nearly two hours on the phone to Telstra trying to get it to work . It does work but not reliably .
