Water Crossing Bra

Has anyone used or purchased a "Michelle's Sacs Water Crossing Bra", do these work, are they infact an alternative to using a tarp while not having a snorkel? Sounds like a good idea.

I have read a bit about snorkel or not to snorkel. Basically I am trying to avoid spending $500 on a Snorkel on a one off trip to Cape York as I have spent enough on other equipment.

Personally I would do both.

A snorkel is cheap insurance for not letting the motor drown, and the Bra will also save the fan from killing the radiator.
A Tarp will work just as well as a custom made Bra but it may be more fiddly to fit properly.

Cheers Kev

Where does it end?? At least with a tarp ,you can use it for something else. I think most people who have been camping for some years actually want or in my case have, reduced the amount of gear to carry or add to vehicles.

You can't cross the Jardine anymore, which used to be the deepest crossing.

Some creeks are deep, but short.

If you have petrol, I wouldn't worry about a snorkel just for the trip.

I just took a tarp that I use for getting under the car.
Then only used it a few times like the Wenlock or when it was deeper than about 600mm.

That was in the old 85 NB 2.6l petrol pajero.

The bra will only help while you keep the vehicle moving, if you get stuck somewhere in deep water - without a snorkel - it could cost you.

I'd be taking both.

i agree 100%.. while you are moving forward the fjording tarp will create a sort of cavity around the fan etc but as soon as you slow right down or stop that water is going to catch straight up and if your air intake is low you will get a gut full of water.... cost of rebuild for a diesel that has had a gut full of water would probably start at approx $8000 and go up from there...

I would personally rather have the snorkel on and no bra and take it easy across the water... however I have gone to supercrap and paid $8 for a small tarp and have strung that across the front of the car.... while not being custom fit it did the job well enough.

Cheers to all the reposnses. Good point about just using the tarp as it will come in use elsewhere and save on another addition of gear.

I'm in a Petrol Hilux and planning do go to the cape in August, mid to late. What sort of depths should I encounter on the OTL?

Depth of water varies year to year, and the time of season.
You need to talk to people coming the other way as you go.
And watch other people cross if you can :o).
Learn from thier mistakes or good approaches.

Most are under the 600mm.

Some can be bonnet deep, but maybe for 10 metres or so.

There are bypasses on most (some long - 50k, some short - 3 to 4k), so if unsure don't do that creek.

Deepest I had was the Jardine, about 200mm below window sill and just over the bonnet for a short distance (15 to 20m?), since 10 yr old son was dangling his hand in the water while sat on the rear seat, but you can't drive the Jardine any more.

Main Wenlock crossing can be deep, but I think there is a bridge now.

Entrances and exits are more of a common problem than the depth of water.

I would think the cost of the "Car Bra" from Michelle's would probably be pretty similar cost or more than a Snorkle??
Get a Snorkle and a tarp as said above.

John,

The cost of the car Bra is $149.00 plus postage but it is still an expensive tarp

Thanks Kev, was less than I thought.
As you say still an expensive tarp, especially when you can't really use it for anything else.

Hi there Kev, how you been holding up ?? How stupid is that for her own website to be dearer then some one else selling them for her. You would think it would be cheaper buying direct. Well there you go pays to shop around. I did realize it said 7% off but you would think she'd be matching it. Regards Steve M

Thanks Lux Boy, was thinking about one of these for the prado never worried with hilux as it had a snorkel and was diesel but prado is petrol so will be getting both. Regards Steve M

Hi Steve,

I am out of hospital finally (got out last Monday), and now SWMBO is relapsing with her MS.
I am only able to drive up to about 10Km ATM and I only venture out in very light traffic as sudden twists and stopping causes major spasms which creates some interesting driving techniques.
My parents are arriving tomorrow (from St George QLD)for a couple of weeks till we get back to some sort of normal, ( I cant pick the baby up and Sam's to unsteady on her feet). I must admit though that my neighbours are worth their weight in gold.

I too can not believe that Michelle Sac's would knowingly sell their product dearer than one of their distributors. But either way it works out cheaper for us, so who are we to complain.

Cheers Kev

The Bra is $129 with free postage with all the straps and stuff, 'It attaches around the side rear view mirror mounts with heavy duty straps, shock cord and side release buckle in one simple movement', decent tarp isn't always cheap. Snorkel option would be around the $500 mark, which I'd like to avoid at this stage due to other recent purchases.

I owned a petrol Patrol that I flooded without a snorkel/ I now have a 4.2TD, recommend both, snorkel and car bra. You can not buy enough piece of mind.

It is a small investment for peace of mind.

Personally I'd think that the bra would take up a fair wack ofroom whereas a tarp is small to pack up and multi functional.

Gday Luxboy,
as to using a water crossing bra why pay $149.00 for something that is used rarely where as a $10.00 tarp does the same job plus has other uses?. Some companies charge a hell of a lot for very little.

Lux Boy.

My 4 trucks are about to do 2x1 meter water xings a day, untill December these xings are 150 meters long.

I have snorkels on them, the reason being is they work, Tarps and Bras don't.

If the xing is deep enough the engine bay will fill with water with out fail.

If you drive or rev the engine to hard, the fan blade, if plastic will flex into the radiator and chop it up.

I have been doing this water xing since 1994 during the dry and never used a tarp or Bra.

Cheers Steve.

We have a Michelle Sacs Bra for a petrol engined Frontera. We have used it several times and it works well and the biggest plus over a tarp is it takes 2 mins to put on. It takes up very little room when packed. In fact it is a one of those items which are useful for packing between things as a buffer. We have a snorkel on our Diesel 100 Cruiser but I still take the Bra just in case for deeper crossings to protect the radiator area and electronics.
