Hi, me again, GeorgieGirl. Looking for recommended Free Camps while travelling up east coast, across to Darwin and down the centre with kids that are 9 and 8 years old. We will purchase Camps4 before we leave but would like some recommendations as well. Caravans parks for families can be too expensive, especially after being on the road for 5 months. Thanks again.

I could email you camp sites in OZI Explorer of all our trip 2004-2005. You can also find good sites near rivers, along bush tracks but usually only for 1 night. MM me if you want the details.

GeorgieGirl - I haven't been on your intended route yet, but we generally have no trouble finding our own secluded spots. We use Camps Australia Wide as a back up eg "if we don't find anywhere good by 4.30 then we'll look up what Camps has coming up".

You will get a feel for what to look for. Old gravel pits are a favourite for us, but can be closed off from time to time, so some one else having found it doesn't mean it will be available the next year. Tracks often leave the road along rivers, streams and salt pans. I know in SA they leave old roads accessible (in WA they block them off) - i don't know about the other states. You may need to walk tracks first before venturing down them in case they come to a sticky end. Some people take bikes for this purpose. Sometimes we turn down a minor road and just pull off - there is virtually no traffic at night to disturb us.

You will have a fabulous trip.

GeorgieGirl
Do you have Garmin GPS that is capable of using POI's , I have Garmin Files for over 1000 camp sites for all states, if you have a different brand you can get them from the POI website

If you have Garmin send me an Email dtilley@westnet.com.au and I will send them to you , actually they are Excel files so Microsoft Office will open them , I will put them into the Trader at the top of the page.and you can get them there.I will upload Qld and NT
