I am G4HFS and spend at least 3 months every year touring Australia.
I am about to purchase a FT-857D and ATAS-120 here in the UK. I will be using this rig with my Landrover Defender here in the UK and would also like to bring the FT-857D and antenna to Australia to use with my Lancruiser 70. The antenna would be fitted to the bull bar on the LC70.

Does anyone have any issues with regard to this, other than those in the previous thread "On Tuesday, September 26, 2006 by Jim W (QLD) posted about Which Amateur HF Radio / antenna"

The other question is how I go about obtaining a licence to operate in Australia.

Only to say that the 857D is an excellent rig - I've owned one for 18 months. Ensure you bring the instruction book as it is a little complex to set up.

Having spent 15 minutes on the ACMA website simply trying to find the area which deals with Amateur Radio... finally I can suggest you take a look here:

http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD//pc=PC_300165

for details of licencing when visiting Oz.

PS. There is an excellent Yahoo Group which covers the 857, ATAS etc just search Yahoo Groups for "FT-857".

If you "wideband" the 857 you can cover our VKS737 and Flying Doctor frequencies.

Only to mention that should you travel in remote areas and wish to join the 7374wd network, you *cannot* legally use amateur gear.
Other than that, the Travellers Net on 14116 and 21180 is excellent value for outback travellers.

I know of a few who've been doing exactly that for some years. Oh... there are some evil people around - you know who you are, are you listening? :)

Better try 21.185 not 21.180, won't get much on .180 only some bleed over.
lets hope the cycle is better than now. Cheers

Thanks for your help folks.

I looked at that web site Mike and it is still not clear.

I assume from the web site I don't need any extra paper work other than my UK licence, that is, if OZ has implemented CEPT Recommendation T/R 61-01 (to allow reciprocal licensing) - has Australia done this ?

According to clause 16 (2) (a) in section 2 of my UK licence conditions I only have to show my licence "upon request to the relevant supervisory authorities in the host country".

What differences are there between UK and Australian frequency allocations - can I pick these up from the Internet ?

Gorden Bennett Bruce! I don't know! We normally just say: "She'll be right mate" :)

I don't think I would worry too much - you'll be a popular bunny on air here with a "G" call - a friend of mine who was in the States recently operated as "VK3???/mobile W?"

I would suggest you ask the ACMA but as they're bloody useless and have no idea of the rules... don't bother.

An e-mail to the WIA may be worthwhile:
www.wia.org.au/contact.php

As for frequencies: download the 186kb PDF for Oz band plan.
www.wia.org.au/bandplans/

Regards and enjoy Oz :)

Got to agree ACMA hopeless!!
Wife did her f-call a month ago and still not on ACMA datbase. How ahrd can it be seeing that the WIA do all the work and all ACMA has to do is type it into their database.

Thanks Mike- sounds as though you've cracked it for me. I'll Email them just to make sure and thanks for the band plan pdf address.

I've just joined the FT-857 Yahoo group.

hi Mel
here is another link to some info for you
www.vkham.com/australimaps.html

I have a ft-857d and am pleased with it, don't know about the Landrover, A friend has one and is plagued by interference on HF. It radiates so bad that the vehicle should have its own RF licence.
Have a good holiday and maybe catch you on air

Yes the interference was from the Landcruiser. I can park next to him and when he starts up his vehicle it creates s9+ noise on my radio as well as his.
There was a lot of info on the issue on the worst4wd.com web site.
best wishes and good luck
