Bill

If you're going in via Old Laura, 12 mile waterhole is a great spot. There are a number of sites spread along the waterhole.

Seeing as you're up there at the mo, can you give me an update on the condition of the Starke track to Cape Melville (via Hopevale)?

We'll be up that way in about a month and want to go that way. A few years back we asked the Ranger at Cooktown and she said ... no go. Met up with a couple at Cape Melville who had come through and said a tad rough, but no real probs ???

Enjoy ... you lucky bludger ... ;-))

Cheers

Rosco,
Went up the Starcke track to Bathurst Bay/Cape Melville in August last year. No problems at all with 4 vehicles. Nearly the best i condition i have seen it in then. There could be some issues coming back that way with steep sandy exits from some of the gullies. That was after some of the heaviest rain up there for years. Ring Barry Lyon, one of the rangers in Cooktown, he goes up there quite often.
Cheers,
Bros.
Work is the curse of the down and out bludger.

Gooday Bill... you lucky bugger. I'm planning on being up that way in about 10 days. Planning on going Cooktown then to Lakefield NP via Battle Camp Road. Spoke to the ranger at Lakefield yesterday and she told me that you can't go past Hann River as the road is closed between there and Musgrave which means if you are heading north you have to come back down to Laura before going up. Just re read that...hope it makes sense. If you have any further updates please post. Do you know what it is like between Cape Trib & Cooktown. Can you reccomend a spot to stay at Cooktown. Cheers

ps hope you catch some fish.

Hi Erwin
I am staying Cooktown Caravan Park at present and it is a quiet area at the bottom of Mt Cook.It is pretty busy now as the landing of Cpt Cook festival is on but by the time you arrive it will be a lot quieter. The props. are nice people and very helpful with local info.Ther names are John and Mary Noonan.

It suited us as we like the suroundings but I cannot vouch for the others as they are in the middle of the town where there is more activity. It has been showering evry night here but today all clouds have cleared out to sea and is a beaut day. We will be here till Monday then will head for Kingfisher Camp.
Cheers for now and happy trails
