End Of An era?? 4.2 Diesel Patrol Discontinued. the Nissan patrol website does no longer list the 4.2 litre Patrol as part of the Patrol Range. A mate went to buy one lst Sunday at Maitland and was told by a salesman in a purple suit with a yellow tie that "THEY Dont Make Em Anymore" Bullsh$$it sAYS MY MATE. He was Wrong with a capital W. Nissan no longer make the most capable off road vehicle in the world ! This is the most important news for 4wd and caravavnners ever! We have had this truck forever & now it is gone!! Does this mean Nissan has given up and cant compete wth Toyota, or does it mean they are e going to bring out something better Eg. 5 litre intercooled turbo v8 diesel? Stand by for news from Nissan.

Also the 4.8 petrol has no subtank! With 95 litress petrol @ 20ltres per 100k we are not going very far from werever! Toyota are loving this.

Makes you wonder what sort of people are running the show over at Nissan!
Only saving grace for Nissan is the strange melange of bits called a wagon that Toyota have released with their V8 diesel, what with 20-yo body and suspension, gearbox ratios to suit a smaller engine, antiquated dash, opt a/c, etc.
Suppose they'll fix all that when the release the new wagon, but at what price? Remember how much they were charging for their V8 petrol when they first released it in the wagon?
Anyway, I won't be considering another Nissan with their current lineup, and Toyota don't fit the bill yet, so will sit tight for at least another couple of years.

I think that the only diesel engine the Patrol is getting is the 3.0L turbo.

Apparently Australia is part of Europe now, as all the diesel engines are common rail injected which complies with the Euopean emission standards (or some such).

Whats next..........IFS?
So I'm gonna be left with a rebadged prado/troopy V8 D4D as the only viable option till a new patrol is launched. The only problem is that Nissan doesn't kow when or if this will happen. In fact 4X4 Australia saya 'the GU could be the final incarnation of the fabled Patrol nameplate".

They reckon we will get some large useless, American slanted thing called Armada instead that has the offroad abilities of a X-Trail at best.

THe future is definately bleak

It is not all bleak. I've got a 2000 GU 4.2TD. With the reliability of that vehicle it should last me for years.

Drive a brand new 100 series Landcruiser at work (5,000 kms on the clock). My 7 year old patrol drives better and is more comfortable.

Yes, I'll be keeping the patrol for a lot of years yet.

This is my second 4.2 GU and with Nissan saying nothing about whats happening next, they are about to lose me to Toyota. My Gu has 200,000ks and four years old next week so i want to change to another 4.2 or better but with the uncertainty of Nissan, its hard to plan anything. I definately would not even consider a 3 litre engine. I think we buy about half of world wide Patrol sales in Australia so they really are selling buggar all per year world wide, Maybe 12,000 units a year, Why would you tool up again for that. I think its over for the Patrol. I guess they could right hand drive the ugly American thing but it is only petrol and takes up two lanes... Toyotas the way to go.....Sad to say!!!! Michael

I've got a 2.8 GU and a RV 79 4.2l TD Trayback so I'm not going too concerened for a few years. If the 2.8 goes (190km now, probably good for 350-400km minimum) then its 6.5 turbo chev time. The GU is my tourer not my towtruck so the overheating thing aint a problem with the snail but it would be nice to go out and buy a complete brand spankers big displacement turbo diesel live axle job out of the show room floor.

I have driven a new 4.2l auto GXL 100 a year ago but I hate the IFS and the spongy ride of the damn thing through corners. The Patrol cant corner at any great rate of knots cause it understeers but atleast it gives a solid predictable ride, the cruiser leans over like yacht under full sail and its auto box didn't impress either. I personally found it reved too high before changing gears, insisting the turbo be spooled up instead of using 4.2l of low down go. 430Nm@1400rpm in stocko form does not need to sit in a powerband of 2500-3000rpm around town. The manual did appeal but its gearbox aint much bigger than the Patrols tiddler and then came the whole front diff thing.

The first person to bring a custom car building company out would be a squillionaire: I'll have a 1HD-FTE donk, Toyota body with GU rear doors, GU 4.8l Petrol auto gearbox, Pajero dynamics, GU coil sprung axles, Prado fuel tanks....................... better stop dreaming now.

Go Broncos!

Around a camp fire in 30 years time........ electric of course as the family alights from thier hybrid shieboxes, road patrol checking for overt water vapour emmisions the entire way there.
