Not really a topic on this forum, but I was sitting here on the old PC (surfing EO, of course) when the phone rang and I got another call from someone flogging something, tho this time it was a recording, so couldn't identify it, as one had to ring back.
The other day, I got a call, saying I had won a camera. Before they could go on, I asked the person who their company was, and they hung up. All this despite registering with the DNC database, which has been in operation since the beginning of the month.
But I do suggest to all that if they do get an unsolcited call, try to identify who the company is and dob them in.

I heard that there was a 'grace period' from the inception of the registration scheme. About 1 month from rego - I think. Might explain why you're still getting calls. Best way - silent telephone number. No unwanted calls - no worries.

Yeh, I registered the 1st day. I thought it came into being on 1st June. Would love to see a few charged if they keep it up.
A silent number doesn't stop politicians ringing you!
Expect a few calls from people high up in the next few months!

Silent numbers will still get called when they work through all the lines in an exchange. Silent just means it is not listed in the current phone book. We had a silent number once that used to belong to a pizza chain. That was fun for a while until we got it changed.

A telephone number that has not been previously listed (i.e. mine - had it for >30 yrs) and is SILENT does not appear on any listing nor will it be given out by Telstra, except to Police (sometime Emergency Services) and then only under life threatening circumstances or if they (Police - State or Federal) are in possession of an appropriate Warrant investigating certain categories of crimes. Contrary to popular misbelief, Politicians DO NOT have access to SILENT telephone numbers listings so thay they can poll electorates. It is a MYTH.

An UNLISTED number means that it is not listed in the Telephone Directory but subscriber details can still be obtained from Directory Services.

Callers, who randomly (or methodically - using specially designed equipment to dial numbers), MAY, on occasion reach a person with a SILENT number. This diesn't mean that they have access to a listing or registry of telephone numbers. If that should happen to you, DON't ask them where they obtained the number or tell them that it is a SILENT number. Simply advise them that it is a private number and hang up. That's what I do, no more problems or unwanted calls from that source.

My daughter has had her telephone number for about 5 years. It is SILENT, however as it had been previously issued to a business, she occasionally receives calls unrelated to her.

If you wish to have a SILENT telephone number (NOT and UNLISTED) telephone number, then you should request TELSTRA to provide you with one that has not been previously issued - to anyone. This they CAN do - if you ask. Otherwise they may issue you a number that MAY have been dormant (unused) for a period.

If you should register for DO NOT CALL, you may still receive unwanted calls from businesses who have obtained your number off of raffles, competitions, give-a-ways or data bases of numbers bought on the 'grey market' - from unscrupulous organisations who after advising that your details are confodential and private, have on-sold them. You MUST be very selective as to whom you provide your (SILENT) telephone number. People who purchase these data bases often won't give a damm about the DO NOT CALL regsiter anyway.

As I previosly stated - and I stand by it - I have had a SILENT number for >30 yrs and do not nor ever have had a problem with unwanted/unsollicited calls from marketing companies or anyone for that matter. The SILENT number system DOES work, contrary to what several ill-informed (you know who you are), misguided and naive people may think.

DIO,
You were obviously one of the lucky ones with a silent number who DIDN'T get called by the Prime Minister at the last election. Lots of people with silent numbers DID get the recorded message of the PM, as well as the bulk of Australia.
A Government enquiry was set up after the election to determine how the advertising company had access to those numbers. Seems that as the company was of overseas origin, it was all too hard, the enquiry buried, so no one was the wiser how the info was obtained.
You mention auto-generated numbers, but it was felt at the enquiry that this company had access to a number database.
But rest assured, that company will be used again at this election.
Be alert and afraid.

Sorry DIO i dont know who your reffering to in that last comment ,I certainly hope that youre not personally attacking me just because i disagreed with you, but i simply stated a fact ..."we have a silent number and still get the calls"

Cheers .....Dave

The only "grace" period specified is a 30 day period from the date of registration, to allow parties to submit there current call lists for "cleaning". A new list will be returned to them excluding anyone on the DNC Register. Obviously, this will be an ongoing requirement.

Also, according to the act, Telemarketers operating outside Australia will face the same penalties as those operating within the Country, but how any enforcement can be applied is not specified.

Interesting to read the Standard also specifies that callers enable calling line identification so the recipient can identify them.

Again, policing this law will be very difficult I suspect.

I can hardly wait to "not hear from these cretins".
Their calls are not good for my blood pressure containment.

Hi Sandman,
Don't hold your breath regarding the enabled CLI. I have a feeling things won't change, or they'll move off-shore (as many are now), where CLI is nigh impossible.
I have a neat CLI monitor which, among other things, can provide a recorded message to specific numbers, including "blocked" or "unavailable", and am considering catching those blocked calls and returning a message stating "this number does not accept blocked calls. Please prefix the dialled number with 1832 if you wish to speak to this service".
Will have to advise the few colleagues who have number blocking to either use the above prefix, or call me on my mobile. Will be interesting.

Bl00dy FAXs!!
Had a business calling my home phone number with a fax for three solid days!! They were not going to stop!
Eventually I configured the PC to receive faxes, captured the thing, then rang them to tell them the the important recipient was not at this number (it was important stuff, so I felt obliged to tell them).

I now don't get that many unsolicited calls but now have the mail box filling up with all sorts of offers from companies that used to call.

How can we stop that, as they never included a reply paid envelope for me to send them crap back.

I would hunt down one of the ones that say "advertising material not accepted" or "addressed mail only" or "Australia post only"...........Define "junk mail" some might call it quality offers from companies.......This is coming from a Postman.

Cheers Stefan (postman pat)
