Just received an email from Queensland Parliament , in response to my petition against plan to close
Hook Point, that the Government had decided to close 18km to traffic.
No date given and nothing mentioned about upgrading the goat track.
Sad day for fisherman.
Can't post link but here is the Ministers letter access address

Now they have been through the consultation process, they can now close the access.
Sad day.
Beatties governement is concerned about looking indecisive, so it makes the decision, consults, and goes ahead.

Yeah,
I just received the same non response as you.
What they don't mention is WHO they had the wide ranging consultation with.
It wasn't the fishermen, campers, residents so who exactly was it?
Also in 11 trips to the island I'VE never seen a bird killed or injured by a 4x4, which seems to be their major reason for the closure. Please chime in if you have seen anything killed by 4x4 on fraser.
I wonder how you'd go suing the minister who makes this decision if your vechicle was damaged by the goat track they are forcing everyone to use.
I'm damn sure it wont be maintained to the standard required.

Seen a couple of Pommie and German tourists knocked off in 4X4s , but that was by their own hand .

When this bunch of clowns - and I apologise to all circus performers who use that title - say that they are consulting with the people they really mean that they have decided what they want and are paying very elementary lip service to the term "consult". Traveston
Dam. Recycled water. Council amalgamations. Seized water
infrastructure which we paid for at council level and
the tip is it will be sold off to 'Private enterprise" like our power supply system in a couple of years
Premier Pete and the Fair Maid Anna don't give a damn - no pun intended - about the environment, the economy or the average guy in the street. As long as they can push their little agenda and make cushy jobs for themselves and their mates with big developers the rest of us can go to hell. See a report in our local Sunshine Coast paper about the number of ex pollies from Pete's Party and top level public servants who have joiuned the ranks of a MAJOR player in Queensland developement. The Water Commissioner is a vice chair or director of the same company. Two salaries??
Did they commit to improving the access road NO. Do the reasons given make sense NO. It appears that what they really want is to stop the flow of traffic from the bottom end altogether so we will have to either stay at
home or use Urangan thru Kingfisher. I wonder who owns most of the resorts on Fraser? I wonder which Company is 'working' hand in glove with Parks and Wildlife? Who has the biggest fleet of tour buses and do they use Hook Pt?
Call me a cynic but there is an ulteria motive and it isn't the wildlife. The pair of them could not lie straight in bed
Boy are we paying for not throwing him and his crew out last time around.

Just something worth mentioning. The letter states that the closure was part of "The Great Sandy Region Management Plan 1994-2010". This plan would have been open to public consultation when it was in draft form probably some time prior to 1994 - that would have been your opportunity to object. Any attempt to bag the government's public consultation on the issue now is probably not fair, unless you objected back when the actual consultation period was open. Don't bother shutting the
gate now as the say - the horse has bolted.
Don't get me wrong - I reckon the closure stinks and the inland road will NEVER be maintained to the level needed for the traffic. I just think if you want to bag the government, get the facts straight.
The lesson to be learned? Have a read of the plan and find out what else they have in mind for our island paradise and start lobbying against any future changes ahead of time! ;-)
Cheers
Scoey!

Scoey,
It was about 3 elections ago that they were going to upgrade the goat track as part of the master plan.
Objections to their planned closure has been ongoing since that time.

First submission made by a group of which I was a part was made in about Feb 2005. The response at that time by this same bunch of ................ indicated that no closure would be made until the old mining road was upgraded. We were assured that the tenders were being called for the reconstruction in the March and the funding would be made available in the following budget.
I go to Fraser about once a year so it is of no great consequence to me personally but that is not why I agree to be part of groups looking for a fair go.
The fact that I may or may not have voted for Premier Pete is also of no consequence because a great deal of the stupid decision making has occurred since his re-election.
The alternate road is currently unsafe in my opinion and certainly a health
hazard to your kidneys in particular.
