Hello
We'd like to visit the Australian Open Tennis in
Melbourne in January 2008 and stay in our motorhome - can anyone recommend a good site near(ish) the venue? - obviously, free-camping preferred, but I guess that's a tough call.
many thanks in anticipation

What do you call near?
you wont get anything free, and nothing close really.

Thanks for your interest - I guess anywhere within walking distance to a suburban train within an hour from the venue.
Does that help?

Hey truckie, wasn't there some people who camped just over the river during the commonwealth games? they were even allowed a
camp fire although they weren't allowed to
cook on it. I reckon they were only 5 minutes walk to rod laver arena...

Hi
there are a couple of Caravan parks in
Melbourne, probably not what you wanted, but they may be your best bet,
www.totaltravel.com.au/link.asp?fid=570475 [to the north of
Melbourne - close to trams]
or this one in the east of
melbourne, close to buses into city

I have no idea what either of these are like, I'm on a couple of acres an hour out of
melbourne, you could plonk your motorhome in the back yard, though getting into the city could be tricky as it's a 20 min drive to the nearest train station, however, if you;d like to talk about it, you should be able to get my email from my rig info.

Hi Lyn
Many thanks for your input and gracious offer - you are very kind.
I'll chase up the references to the van parks.

You could stay on the out skirts around Warrandyte or Kangaroo Ground and then possibly free park at a railway station like Eltham each day. You would have to be mighty early to the station to park. It might depend how big your motorhome is. Diamond Creek might work better as it doubles for a shopping centre car park or Wattle Glen which is close but more of a country station. This is our local area so I know what I am talking about. I can't think of anywhere close enough to walk to the venue. 'Tell him he's dreamin'!! Chris
