Hi all i am just hoping someone can help me a specific nipple on my tail shaft .
I have a 2h diesel landcruiser and was greasing up today with my mcnaught grease gun and found i couldnt quite get the grease to go in on the tail shaft by the back axle .
I can get the gun on there but it doesnt quite sit square enough for the grease to pump in cleanly ,i was wondering if anyone had any tricks up their sleeves .
As an end note i did take the nipple out and checked to see if it was blocked but it was clear and while it was out i managed to put some in with needle but i dont believe i got in as much as i would like to .
Your help would be appreciated .pete

Pete,
I had the same trouble with both the trusty Mav and the Patrol in the front uni. In my case, the nipple was pointing thru the narrowest gap of the uni, and the running angle of the shaft was closing that gap, a problem that didn't exist with the rear shaft, which was a straighter angle.
I had several gun nozzles, so could afford to trash one if necessary. I ground some metal off each side of the nozzle so it would just clear the yoke of the uni. There was enough meat in the nozzle to allow me to do this without cutting thru it. I still have to turn the uni to a particlular angle to get the nozzle in and get a clean squirt, but it works.

Guess I meant to say that the tight gap in the uni prevented the gun nozzle from being inserted exactly square onto the nipple. Hence the mods to the nozzle.

thanks gerry ,i did have a look today at coventrys and they dont have anything that would go on the nipple ,and the last thing i want to do is chew the nipple so as you have suggested a bit of grinding maybe in order .

Jack up one wheel, turn wheel until nipple is in better position. Gap opens and closes as shaft turns.

Hi Mikee,
For the rear shaft, fine. Not sure what other vehicles are like, but on the front shaft of the Nissan Patrol, the front yoke only opens up at the top coz of the shaft angle, with the engine right above blocking access. No amount of turning would allow the standard nozzle to fit squarely on the nipple, except from above.
Apart from grinding the nozzle to fit, a U-shaped tube from the gun so the nozzle could come in from above was the only other answer.
Don't know what Nissan do to grease it, probably nothing - lol!

Gerry, you said it, grease the nipple when it points up. I have that dilemma on my HJ75. Replaced the solid grease tube on my grease gun with a flexible tube and the original nipple receiver screwed on its end. Works fine now but insertion is by feel only. BTW, my grease gun is the little jobbie that uses grease cartridges.

Hi Klaus,
Yeh, I've got a flexible tube as well, but it's almost impossible to get enough pressure directly onto the nipple so as to avoid grease squirting out the sides.

Gerry, it should not require much pressure if your nipple fitting grips the nipple properly.
I found that there are fittings with two and others with three prongs gripping the nipple. I found the three prong holds better.
There is a similar issue with the snap on water hose fittings.

All I need to make sure of is that the fitting bites squarely on the nipple and is not pushed over by one of the universals 'arms'.

Hi Klaus,
Understand what you are saying. Perhaps the quality of the nozzle fitted to the flex hose might have been a factor in my case; in any event, I found that without some good pressure on the nipple, I could not get it to inject grease properly, and getting that pressure was quite difficult with a flex hose. Perhaps if I'd bought one from a more respectable supplier!
Cheers,
Gerry

Hi Pete

It is a simple solution all you do is go buy a Straight Nipple there about 1 inch long.

You then have to screw the other one out and put the straight one in to do the job and it pokes out through the universal so can not stay there it will do the job then screw the long one out and put the short one back abit messy but job done.

Regards John

You can take the fitting off the end and just press the pipe against the nipple. If you hold it firmly and square then most of it goes in. You could experiment with a bit of rubber to get a better seal. So far I like the idea of the tube.

You can go and purchase a long nipple from an auto shop, they are about 25 mm long and will protrude out where you can get the gun on to it.

Not the ideal interim sloution until you buy another size nipple is to ( if pratical ) that is, disconnect the shaft and grease it disconnected. May be worth considering. Regards G.T.
