why is the goat track "un safe" as quoted by some? "bad for the kidneys"

That's just people who don't understand goats - easy.

Shane,
The 'goat track' bypass road for
Hook Point on Fraser Island is an
old road which was formed by the sand miners/timber cutters who used to be on the island.
It was a bitumen road and has not deteriotated to large pot holes in the broken bitumen.
It is a very slow road and if driver at any speed can be very dangerous.

We have been visiting Fraser once a year since 1988 and have only travelled on the goat track twice. The track is certainly unsafe for the number of cars travelling from Inskip if
Hook Point is closed.
We always plan our trip so that we can travel
Hook Point around low tide to bypass the inland track because of the bad conditions, even is it means leaving
Brisbane at 4am to get to barge at 7am, usually the first barge of the day.

The old bitumen road was graded some time ago, in the last couple of years we have travelled it twice with our trailer on with no problems. It's a corrugated track these days, not the pot-holed track it was years ago. I did drive it when the pot holes were still there and could barely drive more than 5-10kph, but last time I drove it, we could get up to around 35-40kph.... LOL.....
Cheers
Brian

Nothing much wrong with it.
Just a bit corrugated.
Much better now than when it was a collection of potholes.
Just drive to the conditions.

I drove it last week
It's unpleasantly corrugated, but no longer full of holes like it once was.
People need to be reasonable, just because you 'can' do 80 around
Hook point doesn't mean that you should try to do it on the bypass.
(I will add that I drove it after three days of heavy rain, so it was in good nick, I imagine that it would be different after busy periods and no rain)
