I have a 2000GUII 3l td automatic patrol with approx 130,000kms and I think the auto is a bit sloppy. I have driven many types of automatic vehicles and they generally feel/sound quite positive when accelerating. There is of course some slip as you are starting off but normally they engine revs increase fairly linearly with the speed of the vehicle.
I notice that with the patrol, I can hold the engine revs at about 3000rpm maintaining a moderate acceleration and the speed will increase over a range of about 40 to 70km/h. At about 80km/h the torque convertor locks up and works as expected.
Is this normal, or does it indicate a problem with the torque convertor?.
I bought the vehicle about a year ago and it performs
well in offroad conditions and generally good on the road, its just this sloppy feel.

The gear gaps between auto 4wds and cars are very different. What might be the case is the patrol accelerating slolwy due to its lower ratio, so you get revs and not much speed. I would expect it to shift into second between 15-20km/hr rather than 25-30 for a dunnydore/fallcon. Due to the lack of speed, you might be mistaking the low gearing for slippage. When I drove a GU3 td auto I found the same thing and that there is a sizeable gap between the 2nd and 3rd ratios. I would expect it to click into 3rd at 40km/hr and hold this to 70-80 before going for fourth and the torque converter.
I'd personally say that it is normal, but having only driven not owned one I cant be certain.

I found the GU 3.0L autos run slipping on the torque converter almost all the time with city driving, very rarley locking up but when the are on the torque converter they are very "sloppy". Like with my auto in the surf the revs will move a couple of hundred RPMS then kind of lock in, but the GU's just keep reving and slipping. It's kind of strange, but I don't hink it's abnormal for a GU.

Basically it's Nissans way of fooling you into thinking that this motor isn't as overwhelmed in a big car as it really is. What they really needed to do was put the 5 speed auto. Then we would have a much better, more civilised and responsive car......
When I first drove one I was rather put off by it, but quickly got used to it, and in my opinion the 3.0 with a 4 speed slush box is still way better than driving the 3.0 with a manual box.
It can't be that bad though, they are selling their arses off and have been for 3 years.

Thanks for the replies guys, looks like the general opinion agrees that its OK. I guess the only way I will really satisfy myself that it drives "normally" is to
test drive a few and compare.
