Who remembers the G800s, I had a set on my EK Holden, the very first Radials I had used, , I ran those tyres in 1967 from Waikerie SA to Perth, Carnarvon,Marble Bar,Broome, Darwin,Alice Springs, Oodnadatta ,Marree, to Home again, had only 1 blowout near Liegh Creek

We criticised the early Lotus-Cortina for rather vague, fussy handling on the road, but the new model is a terrific improvement. Our test car was shod with Goodyear G800 radial tyres on the standard 5 1/2 in. rims which gave first class handling in the dry, although a great deal of ..............................

A great tyre--I had them on my HX 5.0 litre premier with 6" rims, lasted for ever and held on well. A few years later I acquired a HQ, fitted a yella terra equipped 202 bored out etc-stage 5 bla bla and under the house found some 6' rims with 2 of my original g800's and the tyre fitter wanted too know where I had kept them--best tyre ever made etc

cheers

Remember them on the XT ford my father first bought in 69, magic after the cross plies.

The bridgestones 206s weren't too bad either, even though they came out a little later (1971?)

Ran 165/70/10 on my mini, and used to like going up the inside of ford GTs and 327 monaros in the corners when they were sideways sliding out of a corner.

Had a set on a mini 850cc I bought second hand complete with racing stripes and wood dash in 1967. Young and innocent, I got dudded by the salesman when I traded on a new Cooper S. "It will be hard to sell with those chunky tyres."

Had them on my first car - a 1969 Mark2 Cortina 440 with 4 in the floor.
They were the factory fitted option, and went on 5 1/2 inch wide rims, which were not standard - the standard rims were 5 inch with crossplies. That was a great car until it rolled :-((

I had a 1969 Cortina GT , it had the Radials as standard, stiffer suspension and was the Grecian Gold with Maat Black bonnet and black stripe, I loved it, wish I had not traded it on a 2 door VG Pacer . And I didn't roll it , maybe because the way it did handle,

Would be worth a mint today if you still had it. I'd guess it had the "SuperRoo" on the side too. And the twin barrel carb :-))

Mine rolled when it got hit behind the rear wheel by a VW Beetle being driven by a drunk young lady - scooped up that light rear end and over it went. After that I bought a 1970 Corolla station wagon, and took that vehicle over 50,000 miles of tracks in the outback. That was a good car too! And then I had a '69 LandRover. Wish I still had the lot too.

Yep, getting my stripes mixed up - thanks Doug. I just had a vague recollection of Ford using the superoo logo on their other GTs, but must have been my boyhood imagination - 37 years ago!

Showing our age now Doug as I think they "officially" went off the market (the original ones) big chuky radials about 1972 but you could still pick up 13" a little after this if I recall,,, and I don't guarantee that at all.

I travelled at 80MPH in those days almost everywhere interstate in my trusty EH and they were TOPS, a bit lumpy at the old 35MPH in towns but fantastic on the highway and pretty damn good on the dirt too.

They were rebadged as G800 with different tread some time later and were nothing like the originals,,, and for the first time in my life I got 50,000 miles out of a set of tyres.

memories eh!!!!

Cheers Baz

80 Mph too eh, like I always say, when we were doing 80mph your concentation was full on, and the eyes were on the road, that's why we didn't run off the road like they do today at the much slower speeds, how do you get idiot politicians to see that though
Haaa Haaaa yeh

Only too true Doug,,, you know why ,, because we were responsible for our actions and everyone knew it and accepted it,,, no questions asked.

Anyway off the soap box,,, but remember the roads such as the Sturt Highway across the Hay plains narrow gutted road with wooden bridges,,,about 1 foot between semi goin the other way and you, and left hand tyre 6 inches from the edge of the road it was always a test of skill,,and we did it all with no aircon, no CD, no DVD, no UHF, recirculating ball steering, drum brakes (well prior to HD/HR anyway), 1/4 vent full flow ventilation, large back seat for enntertianment,,,,,,, ah I'm on the soapbox again.

Cheers Baz
