We have a 4wd and off road van and thinking about doing some camping and detecting in the wa gold fields area.We are not keen on caravan parks and like
bush camping, am looking for advice from the experienced about radios ,safety, camping, mobile phones, etc. We are not looking to cross any swollen rivers or anthing like that but just do some quiet off road
bush camping and am looking for general advice from the experienced.

I have found this website to be a good start - look at the top of this page and you will see an icon called "Topics" if you work your way throigh the various sub headings you will gain a lot of good information.

peejay,
I guess that before you head-off on your first long trip there are lots of unkowns and thus anxieties. Rarely are there problems, but those people who do get into trouble have mostly been travelling too fast, and/or sometimes they just haven't checked what they should have. Being unlucky is something I haven't seen yet. If your vehicles are in good nick, then you have no worries.

peejay,
The WA goldfields are a bush campers paradise. There is a huge number of
places to
camp in the region. Many of the place names you see on a map of the area are actually old ghost towns or near ghost towns, and there is plenty of spots to
camp in these locations. There is also a few official camping areas scatted in the area. Get a copy of the book "Priceless campsites & rest areas" by Jan Holland, (I think it's available from the Explore Oz
Shop). This is an exelent book and will give you a good idea about what's around. Also try this site.

Hi peejay
Most of our camping has been in our
home state of WA; quite safe. Away from towns, there is usually plenty of scope to drive off into the bush for secluded quiet camping. We are planning a short venture into the Goldfields later this year.
