hi was just looking at getting my first 4wd and am looking at either a prado or pathfinder i am having trouble deciding on which one as i will be doing a lot of beach driving and i am a little concerned about the power of the prado being only a 4 cylinder petrol compared to the 6 of the pathfinder can anyone tell me what the difference in power would be and what the prado would be like for towing a boat and beach work thanks

Depends which Prado you're talking about.

There is an RV spec with the 2.7litre 4 cyclinder. A good motor, but a little under powered. Most specs though (RV6, GXL, VX, Grande) are a 3.4litre v6 - 132km, 303Nm. Quite reasonable on power. I am biased having a GXL with the 3.4 v6. I haven't had any problems driving on sand (of which there is a lot here in WA) once the tyres are aired down as for any 4WD. I've never driven a pathfinder in order to compare the two though.

Hi there hayden, I dont think the 2.7 prado will give you any dramas at all. My old vehicle prior to my prado was a 2.8D hilux and we all know how much power they had NOT, and had taken it up to stockton beach numerous times with out any problems. No it didnt have the guts the prado does so most sand dunes it would bog half way even with tyres write down (14psi) where other vehicles in our group would fly up them, momentum & some extra herbs are the go. For want you want which is obviously putting your boat in the water via the beach with a 2.7 petrol wouldnt see a problem depending on what size boat your talking about ?? The pathfinders are on par with the 3.4L V6 prado but suck juice worse then the prado's so if your concerned about fuel consumption I would not go the V6 prado or pathfinder. I havnt had my long and have not had it on the sand yet (Fraser in October) so cant comment on what your consumption would be in the case of a 3.4 prado on the sand but I am getting roughly low 12's on open road doing the speed limits and the last trip was 12.8 L per 100 with camper on BUT this was all freeway driving and a couple of trips back into town but virtually no start, stopping. Around town up untill last two fills it has been on average around the 15L per 100. The last two fills for some reason have been 18 one week 19 the previous I think due to colder weather (+ the wife driving it) and she's only driving 10k to and 10k back home so not even warming up so pumping extra juice in whilst cold plus have been filling at different servo not sure wether that makes any differance but I doubt it. I test drove the 2.7 prado before buying the V6 but I wanted the extra's like cruise and stuff which isnt available in the 2.7 and also doesnt have the twin tanks had to get the RV6 or higher to get that so if doing long distances you wont have the extra fuel range with the 2.7. Jump on www.redbook.com.au and check out the specs for all your choices then I would test drive the 3 to see what you like. Remember two there arnt alot of after market gear for the pathfinders. Regards Steve M
