Hi all.
Have an old '89 Excel that fatally hemorrhaged a few days ago. The rear main seal went. It can be fixed, but its old, only goes a few thousand km a year, and basically any serious work will cause so many other things to start going wrong. Not to mention the thing is worth a few hunderd dollars.
I have unregistered and uninsured it so far. But now what are my options?
Do I try and sell it off in parts as best I can and then get the carcass to a wrecker? Or is it not worth the effort, and just go the wrecker up front?
Any other options?
Theres 2x tyres and a water pump with really only a few thousand km done. Got to be worth something.
Any advice appreciated.

In the past I just phoned up a wreckers and ask them to come and take it away for free. To wreck it would have been too much hassle and would have landed me in the doghouse for a few weeks :-((

but how much hassle is too much? $500 like from selling bits is better than a kick in the teeth IMO

Tonester, if you could get $500 of parts out of an 18 year old Excel, then sure, go for it. Might cost you a few weekends, adverts in the Trader, and then you still have to dump whats left. A few years back, I got rid of a couple of old 2wd Subarus - one had chassis rust, and the other had expensive mechanical probs. Wreckers said they could pick it up for free, or I could tow it around on a hire trailer, and at best get $200 if there were good parts to be had.
Cheers
Phil

In WA the Fireys are always chasing cars that can roll, and can then have their doors ripped off. They use them for rescue practice. I assume the same would apply in Vic?
If the car is worth nothing (which I assume most Excels are !!!), then I am sure that they would appreciate the training tool. Over here they will pick them up (no cost), just need the rego papers to make sure you owe it.

With price of scrap steel up where it is, the scrappies will pay a 100 for a wreck on wheels they remove. At least they were up to a few months ago. Worth checking on anyway.

Most scrap metal recyclers will remove old wrecks, and some will give you a few bucks for them. Best to have a look in the Yellow Pages.

See if your local firefighters will take it for training if you cannot sell it for parts.

You might get a few $'s for it from the scrap metal merchants, Tonester. A few years ago you had to pay them to come and take your old wrecks/metal. Now with China gobbling up all the iron/steel they can get and more; the s.m.merchants will pay you for it by the ton. They are running commercials up here to get the farmers etc., to give up their dead machinery. Lee Kernagan tells us that they will give so much to charity. Give a few of them a ring to see what they offer, won't cost as much as an ad in the paper.

Take it out bush and rally the crap out of it till it blows. If you take it out to the local place where cars get stolen ralleyed and burnt (most
places have these spots) then you wont feel to guilty about leaving it there as it would be just one of many
