I have a 4.5 litre G.U Patrol petrol engine. I am thinking of installing a Nissan diesel engine. I thought a 4.2 turbo but after looking on the Nissan web site it appears that the only diesel engine they now make is the new generation turbo 3 litre.
As I will be towing a caravan tow ball weight 152kg tare weight 1481kg.
I was wondering if this would be powerful enough to pull up hills without flogging the engine to death, and also economy. Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas.

Thanks Paw ( Peter )

Peter,
Only my opinion but I would be looking for a 4.2 turbo even if you get a re con one.

I have spoken to many many people who tow large vans with the 3.0l Nissan and all are happy with it. The 4.2 does have a tendency to overheat. It's not crippling but it is there and some seem to be worse than others.

Your other option would be the 6.5l V8 Chev. I am sure Roachie and Bilbo would agree with me.

I am not 100% sure but I reckon the V8 would be cheaper to buy than a new 3.0l or the older 4.2TD and it will tow anything you want anywhere you want at whatever speed you want.

There are reliability issues with the 3.0 litre motor which have been well documented on this site. I personally would not purchase a 3.0 litre for that reason.

I have a 4.2 litre and it has done 170,000+ kilometres without a problem. It has never overheated. Many of those kilometres have been done in the north of Oz towing a camping trailer. The 4.2 litres has a very good reputation for being a very reliable motor. Another alternative would be a chev diesel conversion. Those who have taken this option are very pleased.

If you've got your heart set on a diesel- maybe consider selling up and buying a factory GU diesel- by the time you go through the time, cost and hassle of extensive conversion you could swap your gear onto the 'new' 4wd and be on your way. Probably end up costing the same too???

The petrol TB45E is the best for reliability out of the 3 but they do suck the juice.

The conversion is pointless. Sell the 4.5 and buy a factory one if it's what you want. There will be a huge difference in price so do your sums. Fuel costs are only a small part of the equation.
