Just wondering if any Prado owners have travelled to the Cape on the standard AT20 Grandtrecks ??

The Toyota service people reckon they will be ok if I go easy. Anyone had problems with those ??

The Service Manager that I discussed this with drives a Cruiser and does heaps of offroad. He also talks to customers everyday about where they have been with their cars. I guess he might have some idea maybe.

I don't have a Prado, drive a Landcruiser 100 TD.
Have travelled to the tip twice in the last 3 years on Dunlop Grandtreks. No issues at all, no punctures nor is there any cuts or chips in the tyres, so I think your Toyota service people seem to be giving you suitable advice.

Our experience is that the car drivers that seem to have the most problems appear to be those who have modified their cars and drive them too hard. The group that came with us last time had standard 4WD's for the most part, and we took our time and saw a bit of the country.
You do have to watch out for the drivers who use too much speed, the're a real menace on the way.

Thanks Graeme. Thats a very good response. I will certainly be poking along very carefully. These tyres only have 3k on them so should be fine.

Cheers

Just keep in mind that Cruiser is using different type of tyre compared to the Prado (AT22 I think).

They are totally different tyres and personally I would not take Prado Grandreks to
any remote places... They got paper thin sidewalls and very easily wrecked....

Last night there was a set of 4 BFG ATs on eBay for $599 to suit 17" Prado wheels , only done 1500km ( maybe ).

I guess noone bid cause of the odd size.

Why are you set on keeping the original tyres ? You could get some AT tyres that arent noisey and although cost a little more will last twice as long. May also save you the pain of trying to get a 17" tyre in the ass end of nowhere if things go wrong.

Glenn.

A friend of mine did the cape with grandtreks on his cruiser and did not have any tyre problems.
But...I agree with Glenn D..the wear capability of the grandtreks is Sh.. and you will have to change them sooner rather than later. I took mine off with about 25% left and kept them to put back on when I sell it.
