I appreciate diesel v petrol has been done to death, however looking at the current hilux the only apparent advantage of the diesel is in terms of economy and, therefore, range...there is similar torque [at similar revs], less power....

...discounting the fuel economy, and that i don't care about the ultimate longevity of the engine what else is the point in getting a diesel?

I went the D4D only because of the economy( 9lt per 100k vs 13-14 per 100 for the petrol)
Resale is always better for diesel as well.
There a great think apart from the long wait to get one.

Cheers

Exactly why I sold a Kia Sorrento (1yo, bought new) that with a 135kw Petrol 5sp Auto was getting > 13.5L / 100km whilst I was driving it so light footed that you'd think fuel rations were in place. Journo's were getting 16-18L / 100km.

Versus

My 07 D4D Auto Prado that I sink the boot into it, a/c on 50% of the day and still achieving < 9.5L / 100km.

So big thumbs up for diesel economy.

I'd never get another large family car (ie, size of a commodore / falcon) or 4WD again unless it was a diesel.

"Why buy a diesel?"

- Range is greater
- Diesel consumption doesn't increase as much as petrol when you're slogging in low range
- Diesel is a lot safer than petrol in jerry cans
- Diesel is more available in remote areas
- Diesel exhausts run cooler, and are less likely to ignite grass
- Better engine braking
- Better torque at low revs
- I like the feel and smell of the stuff
- Diesel motors make your "ute" sound like a "truck"

Phil,

I agree with nearly all your points except

- Diesel exhausts run cooler, and are less likely to ignite grass

The late model diesels, in particular the D4D Hilux, have catalytic converters, these things run really hot to work properly so I don't think the point would apply to the late model stuff.

Could be wrong though, thought I got something wrong once but it turned out I was mistaken ;-)

Steve.
