Had to travel through lots of water last Friday night after the heavy rain in Newcastle area. After a 50m crossing about 60cm deep the power steering did not work. It rectified itself after a short time as quick as it takes the brakes to come back. Has anybody had this problem before? I drive an 05 Rodeo.

Sounds very much like a slipping belt, get it tightened as soon as you can.
Also check the condition of the belt as it may be damaged and could (will) give up at a bad time.

So are you suggesting the power steering belt may have come into contact with water to cause it to slip? Does the power steering have a belt? I thought it was a fully closed system.

Yes, the power steering pump is belt driven. The belt was probably a little slack to begin with and the 'lubricating' effect of the water caused the belt to slip. While the belt was slipping heat would have been generated and the contact surface degraded or even burnt. For peace of mind it's probably best to replace it as it's no fun trying to wrestle with steering when you have lost the power assist.

I'm with Phil on this one. I would say 99% thats what has happened and just dryed out and you got power steer back again. Maybe the belt needs tightning up just a tad. Regards Steve M

I agree that it was a wet belt.... either tighten it up or if you feel that it is tight enough give the belt a quick spray with some stuff called "belt grip" costs about $10 and it basically puts a sticky coating on the belt that helps stop slipping.

If your belt is loose you will often hear it squeal sometimes when you put the wheel to full lock as the pressure onto the bypass valve is enough to make the belt slip on the pulley.
