Why not start by having a look at the following threads:

44065 and 41564

As you would be importing a vehicle to NZ you would have to comply with relevant laws. Suggest you find a shiping company willing to transport your vehicle. There are no roll on roll of type ferries as you'd expect to find that travel to Tasmania, Kangaroo Island etc.

Rental vehicles are readily available at competitive rates with a very large choice of make, model, configuration etc (yes including 4wds).

Karen and Malcom,
I looked spent a few months travelling in NZ a few years ago and bought a car and left it with a friend to sell it for me. I got the same price back for the car as what I sold it for and had no drama's with it. Try the nz trading post or any friends over there.

I looked into this about 2 yaers ago and 1t was about $3000 for a 20' container return and you need a Carnet so that you can not sell your vehicle. The shipping time was about 6 days. Still thinking of doing it having given up work!!

Rented late model Commodore sedan (go any where indestructable type) for 3 weeks mid 2006.
Cost approx $1,500.00 + fuel. Only two places that you were NOT to take it (1) Skippers Canyon (Queenstown) and (2) Tasman Glacier (Mt Cook Park) other than that we went out past Glenorchy to the mountains and rivers (back country), all through the Catlins (lots and lots of 5th rate dirt roads), all around Dunedin and up to the TV tower (mountain) lookout (great views 360 degrees) all around the Banks Peninsula out past Diamond Head - as far as the tracks went (that's a long way with precipitous drops to the ocean). All around Westport and north throught he old towns in the deserted coal mining country (mountains).
Car was more than capable on all of the roads we travelled. No damage sustained not even a flat tyre. Had a great time and saw parts of the country many people only dream about. Would you need a 4 wheel drive. I say NO, unless you intend to go OFF ROAD into very difficult country which you would probably need local knowledge or guide. Plenty of 4 wheel drive adventure type tours available. All in all costs would be heaps cheaper than taking your own vehicle which could amount o $4 - $5 thousand or more. Who knows.
Remember it's not the type of vehicle that you drive but it's how you drive the type of vehicle you've got. That makes all the difference.

Karen and Malcolm, member 10Parra does this quite regularly. Takes his Nissan Patrol and CT (more recently caravan) to NZ for several months of fly fishing.

You should be able to find him in the members list and send him a PM. I'm sure he will be able to give you all the info you need.

The cost is about $2,000 each way for a vehicle. There is roll-on roll-off service. Vehicles are a lot cheaper in NZ, have a look at;

You are never far from good accomodation of all grades I do not think you will need 4wd for 99% of your travels.

thanks very much for all the replies.
It isnt really about the cost and i agree with people we probably wont need a 4wd but having returned from a recent holiday over there-last week we found the cost of staying in parks and cp very expensive. apparently a lot of free camping over there has been shut down in recent times and the cost of cp is $40 per night which becomes very expensive over 6 months. if we had our set up at least we could utilise camping out a little more. appreciate all the replies and information but still leaning towards taking vehicle over for 6 months or more.
thanks again

Ask Wilhelmsen shipping line ..
they do roll-on roll-off and it is charged by volume (cubic meter)
there are dramatic differences though between forwarders ...
I shipped a truck, boat, camper from the US and prices varied
between $160/cbm to $230/cbm US$ that is .. they all have a 30%
fuel surcharge which makes it expensive .. as far as I know Wilhelmsen
goes to NZ and it should be cheaper ..
start with a few freight forwarders.. another option with smaller cars/trucks
than my rig is a container ... usually cheaper ... again shop around with some
freight forwarders ...
I totally understand where you are coming from .. can't be bothered myself with a rental car and not having my convenience for a longer trip .. we are thinking to go to NZ for 6-8 months but havn't decided at this stage ... a pain to deal with is the warf and the quaranmtine and fumigation when you come back .. they are pigs and have no respect for other peoples property ... you should have seen my boat after it came in at Fremantle ...
good luck
gmd
