Do you mean like this one in the photo - if yes then that means ME! Going to give it it's first serious drive in the
simpson desert tomorrow for a couple of days. Very happy with it so far after 4,500 klms. Good fuel consumption and PLENTY of Go Power.

Hi 3F62,
I took a V8 78 series for a
test drive and must admit i was expecting more. Hoping in i was taken back nearly 20 years - couldn't tell it was a new vehicle except it was clean!!!
The motor was something else. Took a corner at 30km/hr in 5th gear and it just went around like in 2nd. Had bag loads of torque. However, the acceleration was nothing to write
home about at all - good, but not what I was expecting. My 3.0TD (with dtronic) would accelerate faster - I am sure Mr Toyota has put on an exhaust 3 sizes too small just to restrict it and make future models have more power! Also, while the gearbox has supposedly been upgraded, the font diff is the same. Will be interesting to see how that goes long term.
Cheers
Captain

Hi Captain. Just love your summary of the 3.0TD. Personally I prefer the un-stressed varieties like the 4.2 in the Nissan or Toyota or the new 4.5 Yota cruiser but we all make choices that suit our circumstances. There's nothing like a really long and nearly flat torque curve from near idle to where ever. Cheers

It'll be interesting to see what the output of the 4.5L V8 is in the replacement wagon when it reportedly comes out later this year. Supposed to be twin turbos.
In its current single-turbo form, it puts out no more kw than the recently superseded 4.2L. Not sure if that's progress in technology.

Sure it has the same power? Tojo site reckons it has 20% more power.
Anyway, this aside it has far more torque, and torque is what you need more of in a 4WD.

I thought I saw a figure of 150kw for the new motor, and I recall the old 4.2 was about 150kw as fitted to the wagon.
Might be 20% more than the 4.2 turbo diesel fitted to 70-series.

Hi Leigh
I previously had a 1HZ 80 series and agree the torque at idle was something else. But when I changed vehicles I reckoned the 3.0TD suited me better than any other on the market at the time (including the 100 4.2TD or GU4.2TD).
I didn't want the IFS of the 100 series and the GU 4.2TD was nowhere near as good driving around town so i went the 3.0TD. And it wasn't a decision made on price, my work buys my vehicles and I could have had any of those. And i am genuinely happy with the 3.0TD GU, it has had zero dramas and its power and torque continue to impress me. If only it had the low down torque of my old 1HZ it would be near perfect!
But having said all that, I am in the throes of getting another 4WD shortly (waiting on the Hummer/200 V8/new Nissan)and it is highly unlikely I will get another Nissan 3.0TD, only because I have yet to ever buy the same vehicle twice.
Cheers
Captain

Hi Captain. I understand where you are coming from and appreciate the decision to buy the 3.0TD. If I had any sense (being in
Melbourne) I'd probably go for a similar set up with auto. Having previously owned a 3.0TD hilux I always found my self running out of puff at about 1,800rpm so I felt I needed something with torque more akin to a tractor. I believe I have achieved that BUT the new V8 has my attention for possible change over with more torque and improved cruising speed...we'll just wait a little longer!! Cheers and happy travels.

I can only compare
mine to my outgoing, but faithful, 80 series TD. The new 70 has excellent acceleration (sorry Captain, I am impressed with the acceleration). Yes the interior is agricultural but at least I know where to put the CB etc (just have to hark back to my Troopie of 15 years ago, prior to the 80).
I'm very happy with the engine and philosophical about the retro look.

People are talking about the old style (read durable) interior like it is a negative. Gee I just love plastic, fabric and carpet in my 4wd, so practical to scrub the mud and dust out of.

It certainly is a negative. As great as the internal layout was back in 1984 you would think for $56K that it could in some way have been improved still allowing for flat surfaces to mount CBs & hold a map. The internals in the current 70 series are
well below current standards, are uncomfortable to drive, have poorly laid out controls & no option for any modern safety features. The way the centre console, idle up & diff lock switches are mounted is like they were an after thought & that's because they were. Heck the dash is still 4" narrower than the body of the car! :-)
Cheers Craig...........

theres no way that interior is durable, I havent seen a more flimsy interior where the grab handles can pull away from the doorskins like that since the Daihatsu Handivan - and even that felt stronger. It might be old and crappy, but it's not durable. I wouldn't call the styling "retro" either. It reminds me of the really old Isuzu Troopers/Holden Jackeroo
