Doug,

I personally hope it doesn't, as the non members have some good contributions to be made. Although some seem to stir the pot a little.

How did you pull up after yesterday??

Guys,
I am a non-financial member, hell I am not even Australian and not even in Aus... But have found this forum infformative and entertaining! Like to think I have maybe answered (probly only one) question or so, and maybe helped or not.... But don't close it off to subscription only :-) There are probably plenty folk like me who wouldn't cough up cash to be here, but find the forum really good. Trolls, flame wars etc - let's face it sometimes it makes good reading as only winches, tyres, tracks, gps etc gets a bit dry! Sorry, I have no opinion on Aldi winches, but own a cheap Taiwan winch. Honest opinion is would I trust it out there? Well, no. In fact I decided to go the hand winch route on my troopy due to flexibility, reliability etc. Taiwan winch fine for playing in the mud, but IMHO not as essential kit. But I know this is purely personal bias. Taiwan winch never failed me, but Murphy's law is nothing if not unpredictable.
Keep Exploroz free to non-members!!

Hi, my FIL bought one last week and we fitted it to his playdoe.
It lookes the same as the ironman and tmax winches but cheaper to buy. It is solid but the solinoids in the control box look a little vulnerable to mud etc, so we mounted it in the engine bay. All we needed was longer leads to reach the winch.
All in all seems to be ok and with 3 year warranty who cares?
Regards
Tour Boy

Most people would probably use their winch as a last resort......be bad to stuck in the middle of nowhere and it dies.
Be sorta like buying a Epirb from Crazy Clarks you maybe lucky or maybe not

A lot of the stuff sold under different shops all comes from the same factory, so if its cheaper its worse???

My terrain tamer shocks are actually TJM shocks, and a lot cheaper does that make them worse??

I used to work in a dairy, bottles of NAME brand milk being filled at X price...quota reached, change to no name labels, same milk supply but cheaper, does that make the quality worse?

Don't just discount it cause its cheaper, many a store currently rip off people selling stuff with their name on it alot dearer than the same product with a lesser name on it.

Do some research and make an informed choice and maybe grab a bargain in the process

Cheers
Stefan

no they arent. they are made in same place to different specs.. same as ARB and Monroe made in same place (or were), but are made to different specs.

You should not be relying on an electric winch. They are a luxury item, nice to have but not essential. In a few of the situations where I have been stuck a front mounted winch would have been useless, except for pulling me further into the muck. If I was relying on a front mounted winch in those situations then it would not matter if the the winch was a $1200 Warn or $600 Aldi special, I would have been stuffed.

So why not take the risk and save a few dollars, at worst you will have to put in some hard work with the hand winch, but that could still happen even if you buy a Warn.

I agree the shovel is a good backup. I used it the other day just to prove to a mate that it could be done. It only took half an hour to dig out and made it ready for the next guy to come down the hill, who was headed for the same washout but because of the dry dirt and ruts I dug it guided him back onto the track. This saved us from winching him as well.

I did a bit of research on winches a couples of years ago and the result is , I believe that there is a generic chinese made winch that TJM first brought into the country as the OX. The same winch is also the basis of the Brawn. If you look at the T MAX, the Mile Marker and several others I can no longer remember the name of, they look and the specs are identical. Repco and Bursons also sell one quite cheaply. It makes you wonder, who was making all the money when they were $1,500.
