Yeah - we had a tree like that in
Adelaide last week. Massive gum tree that was starting to drop limbs and looking a bit sickly. The owners neighbors wanted it cut down as it was thier property that was more threatened. The owner was sympathetic and lodged all the paperwork involved.
The local Council fought and stalled and prevaricated for over 6 months before finally agreeing to allow it to be removed. This involved an arbourist report (at applicant's expense - some hundreds of dollars), fees payable to council for consideration of application and a few other costs.
Last week they hired a contractor to remove the tree. At 5am on the DAY the contractor was due to start a windstorm hit
Adelaide and the tree came down on the nieghbours carport badly damaging 2 cars, crushed the carport and did minor damage to the house.
Was front page news here in
Adelaide and prompted a week of arguments and letters to editor from the tree huggers and tree haters on the issues of safety versus preservation.
General Consensus is that Councils have become real nazis on tree preservation and it virtually has to be proven that it is a safety risk before you can remove one. This of course cost hundreds of dollars and sometimes they will even order you to try and "save" the tree which can cost thousands!
Where will it all end????
