Anyone yet tried this when out in the bush, I am going to give it a go one day,

Remember, take precautions to mimimise any damage and keep well away from people, houses and other property that may be damaged when half a kilo of water in a plastic bottle hits it at 150 mph

So now I not only have to put up with flashing lights as someone goes to the loo (previous post), but am going to have to put up with missiles and mini chutes gently floating down from nowhere. What's next, little computerized green men wandering around saying " Take me to your leader" ?
It's obviously going to get a lot weirder out there in the bush. :))))))))))

Doug, it's goning to be hard to explain to others....real hard as I don't even drink ! "Truly officer...it was a Martian ..landed in a parachute with lights...they look just like dogs." :))))

I'm really glad that I'm an old codger who like to get to bed early. Mind you I did have visions of star watching for a bit , but...umm...dunno if I'm game now...

Gday Doug
Ye me and my old man used to make them all the time when i was younger - the neighbourhood kittens loved the challenge of keeping out of the way. I used to use one of those big foot pumps but i'm sure a portable air compressor would be a lot easier... Those PET bottles hold a bleep load of pressure. If you do a google search i'm sure you'll find some crazy Seppo bloke who's firing them off at 300 or so psi... those Yanks love their weapons

No the PET softdrink bottles are only good for 120psi but I am led to believe those big spring water despenser bottles will take 180psi but yet to build a rig to launch one yet. How did the kiitens go when strapped to the rockets anyway? ;-))

haha someone knows their bottle pressures,
Ye well the russians had a dog, Yanks had a monkey i think...and with the state of the International Space Station at the moment maybe i should have continued the experiment. ;)

I'm not past the problem of trying to work out how the valve works and the trigger set up, easy to see how to induce the pressure into the bottle but what would be the release mechanism, ie if the valve is still in the stem it aint going nowhere, it would have to a blow-off type connection that when the required pressure is reached up she goes .anyhow I will look into it in more detail when I have more time, right now it's sleep time cos I gotta get up at 5am ready for a long day on the road, ...see ya.

Hose connections aren't too good at withstanding that sort of pressure so sometimes they would disconnect by themselves but i do remember that occasionally we had to 'pull back' the outer plastic bit on the hose connector to enable it to release, just as u would do when disconnecting a hose from a garden tap

My launch rig was a 19mm poly tee with a short length of tube on which the bottle was simply rammed on. On the horozontal ends of the tee are a water hose with a one way valve & an air fitting on the other. Just turned on the water tap to 1/2 fill bottle, pumped up with air & at around 100 psi it would release.
Had a bit more of a look at that fella's site & has got me inspired to build one of those multi stage rockets :-)
Cheers Craig..........

Hi Doug,
I will probably show my age here but I can remember when I was roughly round 8 or 9 one of my birthday presents was this exact toy ( now days it would be banned)
The rocket was plastic approx 12 inches 1.5 and you half filled it with water
It was attached to a hand pump that had a locking device at right angles.
It stated that you had a max number of pump strokes then you released the lock.
It worked well especially when over pressurised
To this day I do not know what happened to it

I connected a male garden hose attachment to the end of the bottle (with hot melt glue). This connected onto a short length of garden hose (say 30cm long) which had a female garden hose connector at one end and a tyre valve at the other. I would just pump and pump until the pressure was sufficient to push the two connectors apart and see the rocket fly off.

There was a certain art to it though - the perfect ratio of air to water produced the greatest rocket flight...had to guarantee those kittens reached upper orbit ;-)

PS re: showing your age - i am only 20 :-) things that are dangerous seem to transcend generations haha

Cheers

Doug, We just go to the tyre joint and get some new valve teats and then drill a hole the same size as in a rim in the top of a water bottle cap and push the valve in.
This can then be used on any water bottle that the cap will fit.
Half fill a water bottle then put the compressor onto the valve and pump up to as high a pressure as you can get. (usually about 70 psi on a normal compressor). Hold the bottle with one hand upside down and undo the cap as quickly as possible.
This takes a while to perfect as usually most of the pressure is released before the cap is off.
As well you often get sprayed with a bit of water in the process so it is good to do it on a warm day.
Trial and error will eventually give you the right amount of water, bottle shape and size etc to get the rocket to go aout 50 metres into the air.(If you get any better than this please let us know).
I try to take a couple of these caps and valves whenever I get called out to go to a fire with the CFA, (pump up with the truck compressor and use their water bottles), as a lot of the time we spend in the hurry up and wait mode sitting on our arse and it amuses the troops for a short time.

Hey Doug

My young fella was doing this at 18 months, he used to help me wash the truck after a tour, he would get the old water bottles and play blast off as he would call it with the hose.

By the way the Pub in your rig pic is in Normanton.

Happy Birthday for the other day

Cheers Steve.
