G'day All,

Can anyone out there help with a knocking noise in my 93 4x4 rodeo, eminating from underneath, mid to rear region, maybe more LH side??

It sounded like shock absorber rubbers, I replaced these, no joy. Then I thought it sounded like loose jack under rear seat but it is secure. Thought it could be exhaust but it seems secure also. Thats the sort of noise it sounds like. Mainly does it over small bumps at low to mid speed and occasionally when backing off.

Any help appreciated.

Dave

Dave,
Check your leaf spring bushes. Wear on these could be causing a metal to metal contact.

Stu050,

Thanks mate, I will check these in the next day or so. Do you know if they are rubber or polyurethane??

Dave,
Probably used to be rubber.

I just saw in a 4WD Mag buying guide that the AFAIK Rodeo cab mounts can fail.
Have a look at em.

Philip A,

Thanks for your reply, I will have a look at them too, also has a loud squeak that definitely sounds like cabin/body mounts, maybe same problem.

Hi David

I have 92 model With 275,000 on the clock. Suggest you have a look at the centre bearing on tailshaft & its rubber mount, check uni joints . Also the rear wheel bearings only seem to last about 100,000 Ks then you start to get a bit of vibration & noise coming up via gearstick. Spray a bit of CRC or lanotec on cab mounts one at a time & recheck if noise goes away. Also check exhaust rubber isolators & if it if hits against anything enderneath while you are giving it a good thumping & shaking around.
Hope this is of some help.

Cheers Bungarra.

Bungarra,
Thanks for info, centre bearing and uni's feel OK. Exhaust does not seem to hit against anything. Will check cab mounts as you suggest.

Maybe totally off beam, but have you changed your LSD oil recently?

My old Jack, 1988 LS 2.6L, used to grumble and chatter from the diff when the LSD stuff in the oil wore out. This was most obvious when starting off and doing a right or left turn, such as at the lights.

Have you checked the rubber Donuts that hold the exhaust up to the body, could be the exhaust system banging around?

Dave, no soln offered, and different area.
Ours started just as we set off to Cameron corner area. Sounded like tappets, but why only in the 2500 -3000 rpm range?
Local mechanic easily found the errant pipe vibrating against the firewall, (when we got home).
[Comic relief was the intent of my post: ours is a 2001 build, so thanks to the more serious replies. Shall keep a watch].
Jeff.
