Hi guys,
Have put the order in for my birthday, for Oziexplorer software. These questions have probably been addressed before, but being a bit of a computer novice and knowing there are some very knowledgable people out there in ExplorOZ land, thought i would pick some brains.
My plan is to run the Oziexplorer on my laptop with maps etc, have a GPS mouse and synchronise with my PDA on the dash. Is this the best and most logical way? Questions are:
What version/s of Ozi do I need to buy to use on my laptop as
well as PDA? Can I run PDA as just a screen or can it run as a stand alone unit, without laptop, once software is downloaded and synchronised? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi David
You will need both versions of OziExplorer CD and CE
as far as I know the PDA will not run as a screen only but will run Ozi CE on its own as a stand alone unit (as i run
mine hooked up to a Garmin Etrex)
CE is only made to be used on the go, CD is made as both on the go and at home eg. moving map, and as a planner (you plan all your trips etc. on it at home.
you will need a cable to hook the mouse GPS up to the PDA and power, it will work fine.
Cables should be available at the place you buy the gear from or at GPSOZ.COM
Hope this helps
I read it twice and it seems to make sense LOL

I also concur with Richard.
Use the laptop for the planning stage, and use the PDA in the car/bus/truck/4by/etc.
Depending on the type of PDA though, as it must have windows platform to use ozi CE i.e. Palm will not work (from memory).
A good site to check out is www.gpsaustralia.net/ which has a GPS
forum and online
shop, with many combo cables and mouse gps units available.
Good luck
Mike

David,
Check with GS oz about what you want to do. i have a PDA connected to my GPS and thought the PS was going on nthe blink and thought I wouls upgrade to the same GPS but with color screen. Talke dto them and found that the newer one has different connections so the dual power cord is not avail to connect both at the same time.
In the end I was just going to buy another GPS the same as my old one but then talking with them they gave me some tips on what could be wrong. All fixed now so did't have to wory in the end.
I have bought a bit of gear from them in the past and they have alwayd been hepful.

Actually the PDA (CE) version of OZIexplorer can also be used to create waypoints,
routes, track log etc, just like the PC version. It is a tad more difficult to use though. The biggest challenge I have with the PDA is that the screen is just too small to be able to simultaneously see the track you are on and view the overall region that you are in.
My PDA is an IPAQ 6970 which has a built in GPS, phone, camera etc. Would be a fantastic tool is only the screen was bigger (or my eyes were better).
My answer to the problem was to install an indash 7 inch touch screen monitor and connect it to a PC mounted in the truck. That way I have the advantage of using the PC version of OZI on a larger screen that fits neatly (and safely I might add) into the dash.
Screen and radio/CD/DVD cost me about $500 on EBAY. PC is an HP-EPC small form Factor unit.

You could also use a PDA with a VGA screen and output that to a larger VGA monitor.
