I am currently in the early stages of buying a new 3 Litre Turbo Automatic Patrol.
I have a Goldstream Storm caravan (weighing in at around 1650kgs loaded) that I wish to tow on camping trips to Fraser Island etc.
Does anyone have the above vehicle and tow similar vans/trailers on beachwork and of so how does it perform.

Hi colinF,
We have a 2005 3lt Auto Patrol and have taken our Jayco Outback Eagle to Fraser Is without any problems. We do the run up the beach towing the Jayco and set up camp. We don't take ours on the inland tracks as they are quite wide and difficult to backup in soft sand and could be problematic when encountering on comming traffic. The Auto really helps when towing in soft sand and I find the 3lt motor has more than enough power for what I'm towing. The best way to have a trouble free trip is to pick your tides and don't hesitate to let your tyres down for the soft sand. Ensure that you have some recovery gear in case it does go pear shaped.

Thanks for the information on your Patrol and towing.
I noticed that your patrol has a ARB Turbo timer.
Having never had a Turbo deisel before can you tell me what are the advantages of installing timer.

Hi colinF, I think it's important to let the turbo cool down before shutting down the motor, especially after travelling at high speed, towing etc. The timers are less than $200 and you select how long the motor idles before shutting down after you turn the car off. It's just easier to have it done automatically, rather than sitting in the car for 2 minutes waiting for it to cool down. You can get them from TJM, ARB etc. Some people reckon you don't need them with modern motors but I'm much happier having a cool down period.

I think that Nissan should have at least uprated the automatic gearbox on the Patrol.

It is currently a 4 speed auto, which means fairly big rev changes when it goes from one gear to another.

You may find that the 5 speed auto of the Toyota Prado may be a better choice, plus they have a nice 3.0 D4D motor now. Not to mention the huge 180 litre fuel tank.
