In my opinion, Gas has always worked better in both my Jayco Dove frig and the chescold I use when camping for a week or m ore and dont take the engel or the everkool.

Wasp man

My Chescold RC1180 works as my beer fridge on 240volts all day all night ( hate that 24,7 crap). On gas I would say as good not better. 12 volts, holds it's own if already cold. Fantastic fridges if you know them well.People will know what I'm trying to say.

Dead right Dazza. 240 or gas. I only ever turn mine on to very low, and it cools great. Keep them level, out of the sun and covered if necessary.

Hi Will,

Ours works OK on 12volt, better on 240v and great on gas. As stated earlier just keep it level and you should be good.

Have a good one.

I think the real reason they don't work so well on 12V is that they are normally in a car bouncing along so those type of fridges don't travel so well. I had a 50 Litre chescold and when it was set in one spot and settled it worked great on 240V or Gas. the only time I had it on 12V was when I was travelling and it never worked as well. It also took a few hours to settle down once I took it out of the car. I would always run it on 240V before our trips and it worked no problem.

Once we started travelling more I changed it for a Waeco

Cheers

I borrowed a Chescold and it didn't work too well in the car but was great on gas. It was damn hot on Fraser Island but the fridge worked well.

I did some experimenting last summer with a 3 way frig on 240v which Ive since sold (wish I had a Chescold) in a closed up garage at 40 degrees with no breeze. I found that by placing a computer fan at the back of the unit to blow air over the rear, the interior temp dropped by 8 degrees C. I think that one of the problems with running them in the car is not having adequate air flow over the rear allowing the heat removed from inside the fridge to dissipate. This would especially be so in a non air conditioned area.

Hi all,

Did a test on my Chescold Explorer F400 and here are the results:

Minus 10 while freezing 3 x 2Litre bottles while on gas.

Minus 10 also on 240Volts when the bottles were already frozen - so gas seems better.

These figures sound good but the outside temperature was only between 8 to 18, so in 35 degree weather hopefully it'll chill beer to 5!!

Also the thermometer was placed close to the element, so you could expect it to be a little colder than up the other end

Go the Chescold

Cheers, Will.

This is a very interesting forum. I have had a Chescold for about 20 years and am on the verge of considering the future. From what has been said here the modern 3 way fridges might perform better than my old one. I have been happy with it generally over the years but as soon as it gets over about 38 degrees or whilst driving off road it thaws. When it's hot it requires ice to cool down again. I have been thinking of an Engel type fridge but the battery drainage is always a concern. The cost of setting up a solar powered system on top of the fridge is running into thousand's. Paps.
